The display and all in dash function has stopped working on my factory AM/FM 6disk(in dash) radio in my 2002 EXC. It also controls the video system. The steering wheel controls still operate most of the functions. A local shop will exchange the unit for a reman unit for $400. Does anyone have another source for repairs or exchange? OR... I'd like to put an in dash video unit in its place but still want the use of my steering wheel controls. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
as far as i know the steering wheel controls are out, if you put a flip up in. check ebay for the stock unit first
That is not true, pretty much any aftermarket head unit can be controlled via the sterring wheel controls with a PAC steering wheel interface. The factory headunit sucks... even with the stock speakers and aftermarket radio provided a little more power to sound better. I would personally go with alpine, but I am kinda biased.

P.S If the aftermarket radio does not have a remote the PAC modual is harder to program but it can be done manually.
I'd have to disagree that the factory unit sucks...I put a fairly involved system in my former Bronco...but the factory unit in 1994 was not great.
All I did to my factory 2005 6CD unit was to add a pair of 8" Bazookas, one powered-one slave, and changed the front speakers. The sound is excellent and it all works and looks factory.
I Agree With Matt, I Have A Pair Of 12's In The Rear, Changed The Fronts To Rockford Fosgate, And The Second And Thirds To Infinity, All 6x8's. Very Loud And Very Clear. I Love The Factory Unit For Now. When It Breaks, Thats A Different Story.
The guy that posted info on the PAC interface is on the money. After posting I went to crutchfield's web site and located a product that allows the steering wheel controls to work on any head unit with a remote. Plus it's only $60. Looks like I'll be replacing the stocker with a 7" in dash screen. Now I just wonder how difficult it will be to tie in the existing DVD and overhead moniter... I think I may have to abandon the factory DVD and run both screens off of the in dash head unit.
Make sure you get a good Head unit with Dual Zone availability. That way they can watch vdeo in back and you can listen to music or video in front. Three Units I would Suggest are the Pioneer Avic Z1, (very pricey but has awesome navigation, and it has a Hard drive to store all the Nav and 10 gig for music. The Eclipse AVN6600 , Or any of the Kenwood double din units, (8016, 7016 or 6019). I went with Eclipse and like it but wish i would have gone with the AVIC Z1. The kenwood by the way dosnt come with nav but has a great add on nav system that is made by GARMIN.

Speaking of which...I am in love with the Pioneer AVIC-D2 Does anyone have this running in their X, with the Rear Video? I would love to get into this with navigation, rear camera, and Sirius.
The D2 is very cool comes with navigation but dosnt play DVD's. You have to get a seperate dvd device to play movies on it. But i think for another week or two you can get a free Avic S1 (portable Navigation).
