i removed the plastic trim and was able to lock it . it unlocked but again would not lock.
is this a common problem and does anyone have a fix?

Do you mean with the power lock or the key lock? your note isn't clear. Jim
This is about a 1 hr job to totally repair. Check under the tech thread on power window acutuator and it is the same lock as on the doors but the right side. You can either buy a new actuator for $45 or so or repair the old one. It's all in the tech section. Jim
Once you have the cover off and mechanism exposed, try "bathing" it with penetrating oil and manually work the lock back and forth. After about an hour, mine was freed up and working beautifully. I plan on making the procedure an annual thing. C.J.
I had a similar problem and just sprayed WD-40 into all of the available holes on the back door area and into the key-hole... seemed to work I have had no prob since, maybe tear into it if it doesn't work?
had the same problem, but used rem-lube instead of WD-40 since it doesn't evaporate. haven't had a problem since. had to soak the snot out of it though, gets alot of dirt in there.
Bama buddy did you really expect Ford to tell you there was a problem?
There is a problem with the resistor in the drive motor on the actuators. It should be a very low resistance but as it ages the resistance goes up until it becomes a voltage divider which in turn reduces the current / power to the motor so the actuator can't do it's job.
There is a write up on how to repair the actuators and save the $45/ea in the tech section on the Superduty Truck. It is not in the Excursion section. The work is the same. I have repaired all 5 on my Ex for a cost of $.01 each. Check out the tech section. Jim
I just repaired the front two actuators last night. Back doors and tailgate will be this evening. Thanks to those who did the write-ups and research for this repair. Once you figure it out, and get you hands in there it is a pretty eay fix.
