E4OD Sticks in First Gear
I'm having an intermittant issue with the E4OD automatic tranny in my '89 E350 diesel cube van. About once every tenth time I start it and put it in drive, it will not shift out of first gear. No amount of slow driving / warming it up will coax it out of first gear. If I manually shift into 2nd, it will upshift into 2nd without a problem.
Here's the interesting part: if I pull over and shut off the engine, count to three, then restart, the problem is solved.
On the nine-out-of-ten times it behaves, it behaves for the entire duration of that drive as long as I don't shut off the engine. It has never locked into first in the middle of a particular drive; it either does it at startup, or not at all.
Any specific suggestions on what I should be looking for? Bad sensor? Bad sensor connection? Bad ECU?
