Balanced Crank Flexplate Problem
I built my first engine, a 545 stroker, and had a vibratoin problem. I bought my rotating assembly from Scat Mfg. I had them balance the crank as a part of the assembly. The problem that I had was that the flex plate that they included had a small weight on the ring. Basically the flexplate was for a 460 that didn't have a balanced crank. This being my first build, I installed the flexplate. Guess what, I had a bad vibration at 3,000 rpm. I finally asked Scat about the weight on the flexplate and they agreed that it shouldn't be there. So with a little work with a die grinder, the weight was removed fixing the vibration problem.
My story is not to say that Scat isn't any good, I think the rotating assembly, crank, rods & pistons are great. I can understand that scat accidentally sent me the wrong flexplate. I'm just trying to give a heads up to other first time builders. In other words, if one has the crankshaft balanced internally, there shouldn't be a weight on the flex plate.
