both together is best of all. but internaly balanced will make it run smoother. My motor is balanced internaly and externaly to .2 tolerances, but she doesn't run smooth with a .726 lift on the cam

Thats probably one of the biggest aurguments in performance engine building I know of. I run mine internally balanced, but even nascar has and does occasionally play with external balance, as far as I can tell neither really has an advantage over the other.
