Help! does anyone out there have a donor truck that still has the under dash wiring harness that includes the fuse bus for a 64 F100? I have a short or a broken wire in there somewhere that I can't locate. I'd like to just replace the whole thing and be done with it.
Stop pulling your hair out! Connect a 12v light bulb to the terminals of the fuse for the dash. When the light is on the wire is shorted out. Simplely move the wires around slowly until the light goes out. Then check the area you moved for burned or chaffed insulation. If you see nothing then move it again until the light comes back on. Takes me 15 minutes or less to find shorted wires this way.
Check e-bay for a new harness. The EZ2 wire kits are about 165 bucks and a weekend. Sometimes you can pull the fuse block down, dry it off with a heat gun and just inspect it for problems. These are really simple wiring systems and the light bulb trick works or you could buy a multimeter at Sears for less than 30 bucks. Rotten wiring will give you lots of grief and is easier to replace than screw with! IMHO!
Found a source for reproduction harnesses except for the darn dash harness. Found a donor dash harness in salvage yard and reconditioned it. Repaired damaged wires, and added couple extra for additional circuits, can be labor intensive. Your situation may be matter of finding damaged wire, then solder and tape. Suggest if to recondition existing, or donor harness, do not use the typical electrician tape, there is a harness wrapping tape that works much better and does not make a sticky mess of the harness. Purchased mine from Eastwood, but auto, or hardware stores may carry.
Thanks for the replies. I've been screwing with this off and on for a while. The "rest of the story" is my son tried to replace the fuse bus by splicing all the wires with crimp connects. It worked for a while and then the lights stopped working etc. We've pulled the light switch/fuse block out to work with the wires and sometimes with it all hanging out of the dash I can get the truck to crank but when I go to put the switch back in, it won't crank anymore. I was hoping I could find an old harness in good shape that I could refurbish while it's out of the dash and then install it. I'm a big guy with big hands and I have a hard time trying to solder and splice all those little wires in the dash. Like William said I'm tired of screwing with it and ready to just replace.
