Voltage drop across relay normal?

I have a fender mounted relay (starter relay/solenoid) that triggers the 12v motor to turn hydarulic pump on snow plow. I have a full 14.5 volts on the battery side and when I trigger it and test on the motor side the voltage drops to near 11 volts is that normal or is the relay shot? Is there a way to test a relay like this? Travis

Unless the relay has some sort of resitor in it it's not normal for it to drop voltage. a drop in voltage may indicate that the relay is fried.

All relays use a little amperage when they are energized but it is just a long stretch of wire so there should be very little voltage drop - no where near 3.5 volts. To prove this theory use either a spare relay you have "just in case" or the starter relay. If you are using the starter relay - pull the starter cable off. Then have someone turn the key to start and see what the drop is there. It should be less than a volt - I'd imagine.
