8 hour trip

Hey Guys, I have an 8 hour trip ahead of me at the end of the month(going back to school) and I've decided to take my old 86 f 150 (351 HO) and leave my wife with the Liberty. My question is what should I check before taking off to increase my chances of making it with out breaking down? Tires and brakes are new, fresh carb rebuild 2 months ago plus shocks on all four corners.I am also planning on changing the oil. As far as I know the fuel pump, altenator and water pump are all original (90,000miles) the battery appears to be about 3 years old. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I find it to be a good idea to replace the old belts with new ones, and keep the old ones as a backup. Same for hoses. Replace them while they're still good and save the (old ones) in a "road box" that has a few tools, some tape, water in a jug, qt oil, qt ATF, flashlight, etc. Have a good spare, tire tools/jack, and a fire extinguisher.

But the most important thing to carry, these days, is a cell phone.

A good electrical kit is a good thing to have as well. And don't forget to check the cooling system top to bottom.

I drove my 85 F250 from Brooklyn NY to Northern Michigan in two days with two motorcycles in the back (about 1500 lbs)

The only thing that broke was my wallet from paying for all the gas it drank.

I would check the belts, hoses, plugs, cap, replace that old battery. fill and balance all the tires properly. and hit the road.
