I have a 99 f-250 SD 4x4 with 122k miles, when i start it (especially colder mornings) it will barely run for about 10-15 seconds before it seems to catch up to itself and run okay.. this morning it was worse, i started it and it died again almost instantly, thats only the second time this has happened. I just replaced the IAC valve, a friend of mine with a 5.4 suggested this was the problem, but it didnt help. does anyone have any clue of what kind of sensor or something that might need to be replaced?
my only mods are a flowmaster after the cat. ( 3" in dual 21/2" out .. ) and I cut the air filter cone ( K&N ) so that it resembles a cold air intake. it also has a helix throttle body spacer. and it has had this problem since stock.
also, it only does this COLD, if the motor has been ran in the last 8 hours, it starts perfectly...
also, a couple of weeks ago, i was playing in the mud, and in 4 hi, if i let off the throttle too quickly, it would stall the motor... I think this is caused by the torque converter not unlocking fast enough, because all 4 tires stop so suddelnly... is this normal or no?
If you give it a little pedal will it stay running ? When you changed the Iac did you clean the holes in the throttlebody right where the IAC mounts?
Also chk that the MAF is not dirty .
It could also be a vacum leak .
Rich
oh yes, if i slowly let off the throttle(or if i give it a little more before it dies) it stays running fine, its just acting like the RPMS drop too fast and it cant catch itself to
no i didnt clean the holes, its hard enough to see back there as it is lol....
whats the MAF? mass air flow? yes i cleaned it a month or so ago, doesnt ping as bad now, but didnt help the starting prob.

Check for vacuum leaks too. That PCV valve plumbing elbow has a habit of breaking from age - and by "age" I mean accelerated age, the rubber is bad.
Usually we all see this as the IAC being bad or dirty. It's possible that the holes got clogged leading to the IAC. I'd make SURE there was nothing clogging it before we get too far deep into this.
Which is probably why no one chimed in with more, because we're all waiting for you to check for the clogged passages

Reason: spelling
I do believe that the cool looking helix TB spacer and the IAC and other crap done to the intake was when the TPS and the throttle plate min closed setting got all hosed up
My gut is the throttle body needs to be set to the correct closed spacing, the TPS probably needs re-timing/setting, I suspect a air leak...and something in the spidy sense sugests the MAF may be dirty/oily
i think i would have the resistance of the engine temp senser checked when cold. it could be still in specs but far enough out to cause a problem. i would also remove that chunk of alum. called a spacer and do as fred says have it all set back up.
I've had the same problem with my V10 E350 since new. WHen cold and damp the motor runs rough for a few seconds. Also smells rich. No engine codes. Now with 50,000 miles its getting real bad. I'll try cleaning the IAC holes and replacing the IAC.

Check the IAC first, and other things like vacuum leaks, but it sounds like you might have an injector that leaks when closed, and when you turn it off, the injector leaks fuel into the intake port because it's still under pressure. First time you restart, it sucks all that fuel into that one cylinder and fouls it for a few seconds.
