Which Fuel Pump ????

I have an 1987 F150 4.9 I6 4x4 I am haveing problems with.(again) I have been doing alot of body work IE: rockers and floors. I washed the truck at home and let set over night.I did spray the engine down too.
Just out of the blue Yesterday My truck decided not to start.
It is getting fire but I suspect no fuel... I did get water in fuel relay I believe.
I jumped a hot wire to the pump in the frame rail and it finallytried to start. I changed fuel filter then It started. I ran it about 2000 RPM's and held it and it seemed like it ran out of gas. I can get it started back up but is will still act like it runs out of gas.
I don't have a fuel pressure guage to check it with not anyway to go get one now.
Does this sound like Fuel pump problem of fuel relay?
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
ZZ

If you ran power straight to the frame pump and had it work I would think that the problem would be the relay. The pump should turn on for about 2 seconds when you first turn the key on. The other possibility is an in-tank pump has gone bad and is not supplying the high pressure frame pump with enough fuel to allow the engine to run. Both in-tank pump and frame pump should turn on at the same time for the same duration (both controlled by the same fuel pump relay). You can try grounding pin 6 of the diagnostic connector to force the relay to energize. This will test the relay and should the relay work, you can also listen for in-tank and frame pumps running and not have to worry about hearing them within 2 seconds.

Thanks for the reply Eric.

I have come to believe the problem is in the relay too.
However it clicks when key is turned on. I ran a wire from the red wire on the relay with the key on, to the fuel pump and it starts and runs fine. If I unhook it while it is running it will will act like it runs out of gas in just a few seconds.
So it has to be wire or relay?

To be honest, I'm not really sure without being there. That's a long way to test for continuity, otherwise I'd suggest doing that and measuring resistance between the relay connector and the fuel pump. One other thing to check is the inertia switch, as it would interrupt the circuit between the relay and the fuel pumps. It should be mounted to the firewall, pretty much just in front of the brake pedal. There should be a button on top that you press to reset. Try resetting that and see if it makes any difference.

The red wire comes from the EEC power relay contacts and goes to the coil of the fuel pump relay. This is in no way a test for the fuel pump relay, you are just using it as a hot wire with the key on.
Ground pin 6 like EPNCSU2006 said after you reset the inertia switch.

I did check the inertia switch I pulled the white button up and pressed it back down.
And yes you are right Subford I did use the red wire to see if a Keyed hot wire would make a difference and it did.
I have ground pin #6 and I hear the fuel relay click.
I will try a different relay tomorrow.
Thanks

Note that the yellow wire is the power for fuel pumps at the fuel pump relay, not the red wire.
