I have a 97 f150 4.6 and I just went for a ride about 3 mi and shut my truck off. I came back 2 mins later and when I started it back up it was like you pulled a few plug wires off. Its runnin very rough. I dorve 3 mi back to work and shut it down. The check eng light started flashing about 1 mi into the trip back to work. The light has come on before but never flashing. I get off work in 3 hours and I have to go 30 mi to get home. What do you think is going on, and will it be safe to drive it the 30 mi to get it home where I can work on it. Please help it is a long walk home. Thanks.
Flashing MIL means misfiring that could potentially damage the catalytic converters. If the Triton engine overheats (or if a heat sensor malfunctions) it will shut off half your cylinders to save itself (and feel like half your wires were yanked off). What is your heat guage doing?
I mentioned the overheating thing because it sounded exactly like what happened to me before. In my case it was a faulty cylinder head sensor, but it also made my heatguage go to full H even when the motor was morning cold.
I would suggest getting your computer codes read first and see what's up. If you post them here, people can help you. Maybe you just need a tune up, but if you give us some codes it could save you a few bucks.
P0401 Means your EGR valve is not getting the proper minimum flow of air through it. Could be a number of things there. But rumor has it the DPFE sensor is normally the root of the problem. I had the same code....here is what I did to fix My p0401 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...cer.html?pp=15
I know they are not related. The 0308 is the one I am working on. I put a screwdrive on the # 8 fuel injector an I heard it "clicking". I pulled the #8 plug wire off the coil and it did not throw a spark. I pulled a diff pulg wire off and it did throw a spark. I think this is telling me the coil pack is bad. what do you guys think? I will wait a few before I go and buy one. I have to get to work in the morning. Thanks.
Yes I checked all on that coil. #8 is the only one that did not spark. But after thinking about it, if the spark plug was bad I would not be getting a ground so I would not get a spark either. I checked the coil out per my Hanes bok and it checked bad, but i checked the other coil and it checked the same. I think that tihe hanes book is full of shi*t. So I think it is either the spark pulg or the coil pack. What do you all think? I found a ride to work tomorrow and will mess with it after work. I need to get this fixed, please help! Thanks.
Swap in a new plug would be my first route and would probally be the cheapest way to go as far as step 1....But as you probally already know...they can be a bitch to change. Keep us posted.
I have a 183,000 mi on this truck, I have the plug changing thing down. I will try a diff plug tommrow and see whats up. If not a plug would the coil be the right move? Thanks.
