Since my son inherited the motor gene I was not surprised when he called to say he had picked up a little Yamaha 50cc motorcycle for the grandson. It has shaft drive and an auto trans and appears to be well built (I got on it and it hauled my big butt around with no problem). My 6-year old grandson looks like a spaceman with that full-face helmet on. He is only allowed to ride it in the yard (1 acre) with his Dad present. I was about 11 when I got my first ... a Whizzer motorbike.
I got a Honda 90 from my cousin at 14, for 25 bucks. My folks were dead set against motorcycles but I talked them into it, and my aunt told my mom not to worry, the thing would never run again anyways. She was almost right. But then I was hooked and it wasn't long before I picked up a Hodaka 100, ($50) then a Ducati 160 ($10) and a Honda 160, (free) followed by a Jawa 350, ($25) and then a Triumph 500. ($100.) I had 6 bikes by the time I got my license at 16!
Mine was a 1966? Honda 50 ladies carriage style. My older brother bought it brand new and had Mom to co-sign the 400 dollar loan for it, then he wouldnt pay for it. So I got it at 14. Never could figure out why he bought the ladies style tho ..
Rode it all over those backwoods and hills, had a ball. Next one was a Honda 160 Dream, then a Honda 300 Scrambler, then in 1974 bought a brand new 1000cc Harley Sportster . Never will forget the giddy shakes I had when I first drove it out of the showroom.
