Auto trans for 292

I am thinking about buying a 292 engine to replace my 223.The question I have is what kind of auto trans. will bolt up to a 292? would a c4 or c6 work? Thanks for any help.

It was a C-4 in my 56 Custom with a 292.
If you make that change, you might have to get a slightly higher rear end ratio. IF your getting out of a Donor Car, get the Rear end with it.

I only had a few problems with my 292. It couldn't maintain the Oil up to the Rockers,(I had to buy new Rockers and Shaft's and Pulled the heads to fix the oil flow up to the Rocker shaft's)
It kept blowing out the spark Plugs. Yup, It'd blow em right out of the Head. I'd have to stop and screw em back in, right where it happend.

No other problems at all. It was a good engine.
I just wonder if one of the newer transmissions could be used?
Something with a Four Speed, and a Lock-up Torque converter. Wouldn't that give a little better gas milage?

Greg, may I suggest if you are thinking about upgrading an engine and trannny, then skip up to a 302/351 or since you have a I6 maybe a 300 & C4 or C6 and a rear gear change as well. You will find a lot more options available for that setup. Nothing wrong with your choice except it's age and fewer options.

Does the C4 go back to 61??

[FONT COLOR="#0000ff" SIZE="+1" FACE="Veranda"] The 292 is a nice engine and makes sense if you are looking to install an engine which would be "correct" for your year. There should be no problem finding a rebuildable Fordomatic for that engine.

As to the other engine options, I'd point out that there are front mounts available for the FE's and the I6 240/300. That makes it very easy to install one of these engines into the early 60's trucks.

As for the C4, that was first introduced in 1964. I have heard that the C4 stands for the year of introduction and likewise, C6 stands for it's year of introduction, 1966. I have no evidence to back it up! Anybody have any thoughts?

I do agree with you stockman, that the C4 and C6 were introduced in 1964 and 1966 respectfully, but am not sure that the years of first production is where there name came from. It would make sense though. Also, it may be hard to come accross one, but since the C4's were introduced in 1964, the last year the 292 was used, then if sixte1f100 is really wanting a 292, he may be able to find a matching C4. But I do agree with John, getting a little more modern of a motor such as a 302/351, etc, may be a better choice. And aftermarket engine mounting crossmembers are available to do this sort of swap. I have seen them in Sacramento Vintages catalogs (www.vintage-ford.com) and Obsolete Ford parts out Nashville Georgia, not sure of their web site. Just my thoughts.

They have always been too rich for my blood. Just look at their storefront...I'd rather support someone with less overhead and better prices.

As for a more modern engine...and I don't want to turn this into an anti-small block thread as it all boils down to a matter of opinion to a large extent, but I personally would take an I6 or an FE over a 302/351 anyday. Anyone that has a 302 equipped truck would probably agree that it's under powered. I drove one for several years back in high school.

I should have qualified my comments as pertaining to the Obsolete Ford place in OK, not GA, (although they seem to be in it to only make a buck too).

I was just using the 302/351 as an example Stockman, I too would take an I-6 or FE motor over Fords small block, but just wanted to get the point out that a newer style motor would likely be cheaper to get parts for and rebuild.

I have a Fordomatic transmission for a 292 you can have for free. I came out of a running car.

If you want a C-4 there are adapter kits available for putting one behind a y-block, but they are pricey as I recall. It might be something to check into. Ford had the Ford-O-matic and the Cruise-o-Matic back in those days. I've been told that they are basically the same and the biggest difference was the name change. I don't know much about the older autos so you might want to verify that.

I should have mentioned the COM tranny. The FOM was a 2-spd and the COM was a 3-spd design. There is a lot of confusion with the term "Cruise-O-Matic." Ford did use that label to describe various 3-spd trannies over the years, but never the Ford-O-Matic to my knowledge. Many COM's were used in the early 60's passenger cars so you should be able to find one to mate to a 292.
