I recently put new u-joints in the front axle on my 1996 Effie and the seal on the end of the axle where it goes into the knuckle was a little shabby,so now it is time for ball joints so since I have it that far apart i might as well change them. can anyone tell me what they are called, I've argued with the guy at autozone for about 10 minutes, and got nowhere. is it a dealer only item or can I get it anywhere. thank you in advance.
I've always heard it referred to as the front axle shaft seal. It's not to common of a replacement part but any parts store should at least be able to order it.
Yes, it's not usually "on the shelf" but it's an available part. I work for Advance, and I had to order mine - they came overnight. Take this part number with you "SBK-4". It's the Federal-Mogul kit that has the seals, inner spindle bearing and slinger plates.
This is the seal for the axle where it goes into the back of the 4x4 knuckle. Here's a hint - if your metal slingers are in good shape, don't bother replacing them. They are very difficult to get back on without bending or otherwise deforming. Note the way the seals are stacked in place - there are two rubber seals and a plastic washer, and they go in a specific order.
