Block Heater

I have a simple question for someone that uses theirs but I haven't been able to find mine as of yet. I bought a 03 F-250 7.3 about 4 months ago and, at the time, didn't think to ask the dealer if it was equipped with a block heater. Later when I talked with someone at the dealership they told me that most all 7.3 are equipped with them but they can be tricky to locate, especially if it has never been used before. Can someone please tell me where i should look to see if mine has one??? I looked today from the underside and couldn't find much but I may not be looking in the right place.<O</O

As it gets colder it would sure be nice to be able to use it....the drive to work is rather cool<O</O

Thanks for any help!!!!<O</O

Lay on the ground with a flashlight. Look real hard under the drivers side headlight up in the body behind the bumper. They can be a bear to find at first.

And just leave the plug hanging out of the front of the bumper from there on out. Easy access.
Kind of related, humor: I was in the military, and got orders transferring me from Montana to Alabama. On the drive down (it was Jan) I stopped at a place in Tenessee and got gas. Went in, grabbed some soda, come out and theres a guy just staring at the front of the truck. I said "um . . . yes?"
"Where'd you get an electric truck?"
Too funny. Just reminded me that different parts of the country . . . we have different things. What's common to one, isn't necessarily to all. And heck, really, who in Tenessee would really need a block heater?

Mine is at the front left corner. It's a three pronged plug and it has a rubber cover that slips over it. It's all black so it is a little hard to locate. I dropped mine down and then coiled it and I have it tied up just inside of my bumper. I have never had a reason to use it as it never gets cold here (we jet ski on Thanksgiving here).

An electric truck....good one, Twelve.

LOL...LOL...LOL Thanks for the info. I will look tommorow and try and locate it.

Its funny you ask that..... I just happen to be from middle Tennessee but that does sound like something that someone would ask that is from here. I'm intrested in using it, not so much for the easer starting, but because the drive to work of a morning is rather cool. We do have some cold morning but nothing like up north. One draw back of driving a diesel every day is the time it takes to start warming up the cab but other than that i wouldn't give it up. I have also thought about setting it up on a timmer for 2 hours before i leave so that it doesn't have to be on all night.

Thanks again for the good info...I will look tommorow to see if I have one installed.

Oh man. You're in TN. Open mouth, insert foot. Seriously, you're right though, not cold like up north. I saw ambient -50 up there. It got so cold the flats on your tires would freeze that way and you'd just bump down the road for a few blocks until they got softened up again. The seat foam wouldn't compress until the heat started working. You'd warm the engine and get things started inside and the transmission was so cold you crawled the first two blocks. It took patience.

Yeah I bet. Don't worry bout the TN thing, I sounds like something would say that was from here anyway.

I got interested in this so I ran down stairs and crawled under to check things out and I must not have one. I looked on the drivers side, beneath the parking lights, directly behind the bumper and tow hooks and didn't see anything but a few wiring harnesses that have things attached to them. Nothing that looks like it has a 3 prong plug.

It is a big deal (pricey) to have the dealer install an original one????
Should I purchases an after-market one and install it myself???

Suggestions????

Thanks-

Ckesey, I was under my truck the other day and found the end that goes into the block and traced it back to the main harness then to an unused connector. My truck came without the block heater option. I guess they put the part in the block in all trucks and the option is the 3 prong plug to the harness connector.

I found my plug on the lower bumper cover going to the passenger side of the truck it was hidden pretty good but me and the guy from the truck lot found it after about 10 mins of looking. I was told they all had block heaters.

ever wonder what is on the other side of the plug and the block heater element that screws into the rear header for the oil cooler?

Amiller & Fxtbchopper,

If i put this infromation together and my truck does have the block part but just no visable cord then my best bet may be to try to purchase that cord from a dealer or maybe even from a salvage yard.

I will look a little closer tommorow and see if i can trace anything that goes into the block. Does anyone know where that would be located on the block??? Driver or passanger side???? Amiller....what did the end look like that you traced down???

fxstbchopper- Can you give me any more info on where you found yours in relation to anything else? I don't know that i have a humber cover if that that is what covers the lower side of the bumper...i can see everythign behind my bumper from looking below.

I'll try to track some of this down on my 7.3 tommorow.

Thanks everyone!

it is the rear left side. roll under behind the left tire, and look up in this area. it's above the oil pan towards the left headlight. the part with the cylindrical tube is the oil cooler. the other end of the heater cord is the orange cord in this pic:

WOW...thanks for the good pic, I can see yours exactly if its the orange cord.

So it connected to the oil filter assembly right above the filter itself???

I will look there tommorow.

THANKS

yes, the oil filter screws onto the part that the block heater is in, it is the Rear header for the oil cooler.
