Can this be a problem?

My exhaust on my 2000 F-150 4.6L SC ends approximately 6" after it Y's into one pipe from the two cats. I was talking to some of my friends about it and they're telling me that in the winter time if it gets cold enough it can cause damage to my headers and such. Can any damage come from having my exhaust like this?

I usually trust my friends when it comes to car related info, but sometimes I just want to get an opinion from those are more educated about cars than they are.

Thanks!

I had my exhaust like that for 2 years on a 01 Dodge Ram, and I never had a problem like that. You should be fine.

Well here in Indy we can get winters that get below 0 quite a bit, I didn't know if it got that cold if anything can happen. Thanks for the input, though! Much appreciated.

There is a small chance that it could suck up some cold air after shut down. Also, the cats are a lot closer to the air than they were designed for and this could result in a premature failure of the honeycomb inside. As for messing up your manifolds I don't see that happening.

It wont hurt your exhaust from cold. The problem that people run into when running very short exhaust (open headers) is cold air goes up the pipe and cools the exhaust valves too fast, and cracks them.

Yeah but wouldn't it have to get VERY cold in order for that to happen with the exhaust I have? I mean the pipe ends approximately where the passanger seat is.

Your fine where the pipe ends but if your running it on the street, you ain't legal. Most places have a law that the exhaust MUST exit past the passenger compartment. I had a side exit on my car and got a warning because it was not at the rear of the passenger compartment.(just behind the door instead)

It would have to be very cold for that to happen with any setup. Even open headers will soak in and hold enough heat to keep the air from cooling anything down that fast.

Its possible, but you would probably win the lotto before it happens.

I wasnt saying that it would happen, just that it could happen. Now running straight off the heads, not only will it sound like crap and make no power, it will crack them, been there seen it happen.

I've checked with my neighbor who's been a cop here in Indianapolis for about 30 years and he said it's legal the way I have it. But I am going to do an exhaust system out the back once I get the money.

Thanks for all the input everyone, much appreciated.
