Have a 98 F150 5.4L .
Alternator began overcharging the battery to the point where it continually boiled it over . Replaced the alternator with brand new. Battery is new also.
Continues to overcharge and boil over battery.
Is this Alternator charging controlled by the on board computer ??
Any other suggestions ??
Battery cables check out fine for resistance etc .........

the regulator is inside the alternator, but your close. the battery sends a voltage signal to the regulator to tell it what is charge level is. the alternator send the output back on another line to charge the battery. i would bet one of the wires or terminals is corroded, either at the alternator or at the battery. also you need a good ground. check the ground strap from motor to the frame, and the ground wire on the battery.--- basically look at all the terminals and plugs on the alternaotr, battery, and ground straps and look for corrosion or loose bolts.
Charging problem fixed. Changed the battery - which was new one month ago !
Purchased from Napa Auto, it is an Exide battery. It replaced another which didn't make it through it's warranty period. The battery had some internal short which showed the alternator dead battery intermittently.
Battery tested great on the store tester - so I had to apply some pressure to get them to refund the purchase.
No more Exide batteries for this guy !!
Thank you for the suggestions !

Thanks for posting the fix - I'll watch out for Exide batteries too. Haven't heard of them before, but I usually shop at Autozone anyway. I like Napa though.
Did you get any money back on the alternator? If not I guess you could sell the used one on eBay or something...
No, I didn't pursure any money for the alternator burned out by the faulty battery. Vehicle has 112K miles on it , and Napa really didn't believe me that the battery was bad. So, I am just happy to have the problem fixed and have moved on to bigger fish.
