65 3-speed stuck in first...

i have a 65 F100 I6,3-speed on the floor, that recently decided to stay in first.I crawled under and found that the short linkage(reverse?)was stuck forward not allowing the long linkage(forward gears?) to move at all. After I moved the short linkage back everthing was fine.It shifted in all gears so I hopped in to testdrive...backup,then first gear out the driveway and it's stuck again.Repeated this. The linkages appear in good condition.
Thanks in advance!

Joeweelz, I hope I'm reading your post correctly. Your tranny will not let you shift because you are not completely out of reverse (which is a good thing). After you manually moved the lever back, you were able to shift through all gears, but then you put it in reverse again before trying to pull out of the driveway. You say that the linkages appear to be in good condition, but are they adjusted properly?
I would try adjusting the linkages first, and if that doesn't do it, I think I would go for a new shifter. I hope this helps you.

Kenny, thanks for your response.I've had the truck for 5 years with no tranny trouble(light hauling,no winters)so I was guessing(hoping?) the linkages were okay.I will check the manual and
try it this weekend-any tips or thing to look out for?

More useful(?)info-this wasn't a sporadic condition,it just happened at lunch yesterday. Although i did notice a "slight" difference shifting that morning-just felt a bit "off"
hope this helps.

thanks again,
joe

I t may be that the column levers need to be lubed up. There are nylon bushings between the levers which sometimes bind together. If they did that then it's possible for the linkages to move in unison when you attempt to shift. I'd recommend spraying a lubricant in at the bottom of the column on these levers to see if that helps. Taking apart the column would be much better, but it obviously entails a lot more work and patience.

Thom, Don't most folks remove the column linkages when they use a floor shifter?? I would think that it would work better that way, but what does an automatic propontant know?? ;-)

He he, I was thinking along the same lines that you were thom, Then when I saw that he had a floor shift kit, I figured these things must wear or bind too eventually. I had a 3 on the tree on my first Ford though, where the linkages themselves were adjustable. Both linkages were threaded at the tranny end. After you disconnected the linkage from the transmission levers, you could thread the "connector pin" up or down to make the throw longer or shorter. I don't know if this applies to Joe's truck though.

Joe, your second post got me thinking. There are two more things you can check for. Check to make sure that all the bushings in the levers that your linkages hook up to are still in place. If they have worn to the point of finally falling out, that would cause a non sporadic condition. The other thing is that some shift kits have adjustable stops on them. If these could have backed off (from vibration, etc.) It would change the distance of the throw on your shifter. Just a couple of thoughts for you.

"Read the post...read the entire post." That will be the advice I will *try* to remember and follow. O.K. Guys, my guard is down now as I deserve all of the shots I may get for that little oversight....

Thom, I hope you know that "He-he" that I posted was meant for myself. I thought he had a column shift too the first time I read through it.

I thought the "he-he" was meant for all of us to get a chuckle. The day I stop having fun and laughing while I'm here will be the day you see me last and if I can't laugh at myself then it's definately time to hang it up.

Joweelz, Is the shifter stock or aftermarket. I've used a number of after market shifters over the years and had the same problem when they were well used. My problem was the spring weakening that keeps the shifter lever located to the right when you release it. When I shifted, the Lever would catch on the reverse lever just enough to move it into reverse and jam it all up.
