Upgrading to an Automatic Transmission

I want to change out my manual 3 speed to an automatic. I have located a C4 out of an early 70s station wagon that also has a 302, so I'm thinking it should work. Is this a good choice or should I be look for something else? Is there a difference between the truck C4 and the one from a car?

Depends on how it connects to the TC.

Step up to an OD if you're going to all the trouble.

You can choose a Ford AOD or a Chev 700R4, which has lower gears.

This outfit has info and product for both.

Some of these deal with the C4 as well as the OD, in case you want to beef your C4.

To use the car C4, you will need to buy a Bronco C4 adaptor and the 28 spline output shaft to match.

A true automatic in a Bronco has the dipstick tube in the pan (compared to in the trans case) as well as a deeper pan. This isn't a big deal though.

Thanks for the help guys.

It sounds like the AOD might be better option but much more expensive. Here's the deal I have two leads on C4's one is free if in fact it is a C4, the other is $50.00 but I have to take it out of the car.

Other then the adapter, output shaft, Torque converter and a rebuild job is the length the same? I have heard two different stories, one is that it is the same length and the other is that it is 1.5" longer.

I am going to do more research on the AOD before acutely doing the swap, but with the deal on free transmission I think I should pick it up no matter what it is. Hell it be an AOD, I hope to check it out tomorrow.

Now the AOD is longer so that adds to the swap but maybe it is worth the extra effort.

Thanks again
Tim

Go to Advance Adapters website. It has detailed info on conversions they make and whats alterations are need. They are the company that make parts for early Bronco tranny swaps that most shops sell.
