Ya its really not worth it unless you have big tires and offset..Then you need the kit..Other than that they last 100k on a stock truck with stock tires usually.

100K miles? Yeah right. Actually if you relaced you're bearings twice with timkins, It would almost cost as much as the kit. These guys are saying that they are smokin bearings every 10,000 miles. And with autozone bearings I believe it. Im not gonna spend the money on timkins if they're not much better. And for guys like me the plow snow, and actually do work with these trucks, its a no brainer to make the initial investment in the kit and be done with it. Why would you wanna waste time tearing your hubs apart to change your bearing repeatedly? No thanks I got better things to do. Peace of mind that I wont have to...Priceless!!
Got 100k on mine and they are still good. I plow and carry lots of weight in winter..I bought new units to change out to go to the 2000 rotors and bearings. The bearings are $130 lifetime warr..I'm not worried. I can change it out in 30 mins. If I had larger tires I would consider the kit.
130 bucks? You will change them sooner than later. Even the Autozone bearings MIGHT get you 30,000 miles. These things are designed to Fail. Lifetime warranty still means you gotta tear your hubs back apart again. Maybe Ive just been unlucky lol. Same with my wifes 04 explorer. Junk bearings

Yeah, 100k. I had 128,600 on the drivers side and currently have 178,200 on the passenger side and its still nice and tight. There are guys on here that have more then that on the originals and work them hard. They do fail faster when you put larger tires on though. As far as the cost, hubs with actual timken bearings from AZ are $216 and come with a 3 year warranty. You'd have to buy at least 5 hubs to hit the price of the conversion. The OEM units, IIRC, have timken bearings in them.
As to the NAPA dropping timken because of poor qaulity i can assure you that it had to do more with NAPA and Timken getting into a pissing match over pricing. And the two year time frame is more like 5 years. I managed a NAPA store unil 2008 and we had almost completely phased out timken and national. They switched to SKF which was still a qaulity product, but it had nothing to do with timkens qaulity. It was also around this time that they dropped my beloved Victor/DANA gaskets for felpro. Most of my comeercial customers bought hub assemblies from NAPA, and carquest because the qaulity was better than the candy stores and even though tthe initial part cost was cheaper at autozone when you factor in labor charges lost on warranty returns it wasnt worth the price.
