Night owls--- Can anyone answer a question for me, redoing a pinion seal in an '00 f-350 4x4, took the diff cover off to change gear oil, original had no gasket, just RTF. So I went to Auto Zone, the gasket is unlisted, without going to the dealer does anyone know if this application calls for a gasket sandwiched between RTF or not??
Is everyone out on a date with their wives, or is this just a stupid question?? I don't profess to be a "mechanic" just cheap!!! Anyone help me out if they can!! I have to play golf in the morning!!! Need a ride!! Ha, Ha!!!
Its just RTV. There is no gasket that goes in between the cover and the diff. Just to let you know though dont expect a post to be replied to in 20 minutes.
nobody uses gaskets in the diff cover any more ... its all rtv. when beer 30 rolls around, i dont try typing on this computer because my puter cant spell anymore.
Thanks guys!! I am an impatient soul, sorry bout that!! I was tossing a few back too, maybe I lost track of time!!!
You saved me a trip to the "Dealer", that's always a good thing!!! I just need to remember the bigger the glob, the better the job, probably doesn't hold true for this application!!

It took me about a half hour to write my reply. It was beer 30 for me as well.
Hey Steve, I just changed my gear oil today as well. I would use a gasket! If it is a 12 bolt rear end then the Autozone part number is (RDS 55394). Make sure you use synthetic 75-140 gear oil. You will need 4 qts. Good Luck.
John is correct, Ford does not use gaskets on the rear end. But when I pulled my cover off today I found a lot of little pieces of black rtv in the oil when I strained it. That is what convinced me to use a gasket rather than rtv.
Gaskets keep the water out of my rock crawler diffs better than just rtv.
Thanks for all the input!! I went to AutoZone and had them look up the gasket number and it showed to go to the dealer!! I called the dealer and they told me they don't use gaskets!! What to do??? I just went with RTF, took it for a pretty long test drive, so far so good! I'm with ya'll, I would rather rely on a gasket for those tough conditions, but I couldn't find anyone who could get me close to a gasket that would work!! I'll take that gasket number back to the "Zone" and see if they can find it!!! It's a new location so maybe the just don't have their poop together yet??
You folks are tops for chiming in and helping a semi-mechanic!! I know just enough to be really dangerous!!
Look for my posts, I'll be beggin for answers alot, don't know if I'll write poetry like one of the threads I read earlier, but I do have a sick sense of humor!!

My .02 worth.
Whoever put the cover on last time was a cake decorator. WAY too much RTV.
I've found that a gasket will always sweat oil where a gasket made with RTV, if properly cleaned and applied beforehand will always stay dry.
I do lots of diff work and have been an avid off-roader for many years. If your off pavement up here your either in mud, swamp, rivers or snow. I always use black or grey RTV to seal up diffs. Bad breather hoses and axle seals are a much more common source of water in a diff.
