I believe its a factory garrett turbo. And by the looks its never been serviced. Its on a 94 f-250. But I recently did a motor swap and do not believe the turbo is working. I havent had time to but a gauge on it. And the exhaust is 3" straight pipe.
Polish....if your turbo is a garrett... you proably have a late 94 with a powerstroke. The IDI never came witha garrett turbo......but the powerstroke did. Their were 3 different diesel engines offered in 94. the IDI (no turbo).....the turbo'd IDI ..... and then the powerstroke. Check the 8th digit of you vin #. If its "F" then you do have a powerstroke.
The 8th vin is a K. Making it a idi turbo diesel. I changed the mechanical IP and turned up the fuel one flat. The original owner of the truck was my father and he only changed glow plugs, starters and the ocassional clutch. The T-3 garrett turbo on the truck turns with slight restriction. And the bearing have noticable movement. So I am looking for a rebuild kit for a garrett turbo
I have an 088 ATS turbo for my truck, the turbo is an older t-4. While the exhaust housing is unique the rest is standard stuff. As long as you can properly ID the turbo then you should be able to get the parts from any reputable turbo parts suppliers. I don't know who the suppliers are though as I had my friend rebuild mine, cost me $100.
The turbo has an international tag. And I would be happy if I could rebuild it for $100. Should the turbines be replaced once I get into it. And are there possibly upgrades.
I personally don't know a whole lots about turbos, mostly just how to get some HP out of turbo gas engines. I asked my friend if there were any upgrades for my turbo and he said no because of the age of the turbo. Apparently there isn't much you can do with an early T-4.
The stock Ford turbo outlet flange is on the right, the ATS turbo outlet flange is on the left.
ATS used a 3" downpipe that is round and smooth with the bends.
Ford used a 2.25" ID downpipe that had been run over by a forklift three times before it was installed.
With the rest of the exhaust upgraded to 3" the turbo is more responsive, higher boost at lower RPM and lower EGT's are possible.
I got a Garrett turbo with wastegate in my 93 Factory F250. (ATS system)
A little play in the bearing on these is normal.
Check your waste gate flapper for leakage. Check your waste gate diaphram and spring, make sure they properly close the gate. It does not take a lot of leakage to loose your turbo boost.
Check your exhaust and intake turbine wheels for wear, melting, or rubbing against the housing. If none are present it should be ok.
Lastly does the turbo use oil, if so you do need to rebuild.
I am not sure it a turbo rebuilt is something I would attempt myself. Probably best left to a qualified shop that has the necessary balancing equipment. These things need to be balanced properly due to the high rpm they turn at.
