I see posts about it...and I looked on the Tech Page, but all I see is discussions on cleaning it...and no real instructions. can someone direct me to the specific link where it gives instructions?
You must have been scanning to quick. It's the second item under EGR on the page. As soon as you open the Tech Folder you see..."EGR Disconnect" then under that is "And Cleaning"...You just over looked it somehow.
There are pictures and descriptions and comments...
Mike...You must not be looking at the same thing...when you go to the EGR cleaning post ...the very first post has several links that show and explain what he did and what he used. I didn't use Brake Cleaner I used normal Carb/Fuel Injector cleaner and it worked great. Mine was no where as bad as the guy that posted.
There really isn't much to the job except having plenty of everything you need before hand. I just read the thread and followed the pictures and cleaning tips. It's a good idea to buy a set of "Solvent" gloves because your hands will be soaked with cleaner for a while depending on how bad yours may be.
Thanks. I'll check it again. I saw it's really easy to get to. I'm thinking of just disconnecting it to see if that resolves my problem. But can you do that without removing the throttle plate? I don't want to go that far...I'm not that mechanically inclined. I've got alomst 40K miles on it...I bet that thing is really gunked up. And I wonder if it's what's causing my problem.
The truck bucks like a bronco at around 2000 RPMs and blows huge clouds of dark smoke out the exhaust. It loses power like it's going to stall. It's really bad, to the point I don't want to drive the truck. Thank god I have a backup vehicle.
My dealer's tech is out sick today. Hopefully going to talk to him on Monday.
I have about a month before a road trip, pulling a small boat then...and I need to get this resolved before then.
So far, I have been one of the lucky ones...this is an issue, but from the sounds of what lots of other guys have been through, I think I have been pretty lucky. I still love the truck.
Remove both bolts holding EGR in place.
Use big channel locks to pry side to side then up a little bit.
Loop some bailing wire or coathanger around both ends of EGR valve base.
Use a pry bar wedged up against your wire loop to finish the prying motion upwards.
When EGR is free and clear use carb or brake cleaner and a toothbrush to scrub excess carbon off of EGR valve.
reinstall in reverse
