As my engine is going to need rebuilt somewhere down the road, I was wondering how the 292 and the 312 compare as far as bore, stroke, HP, and Torque... The reason I'm asking is that when I rebuild my 292, then I would like to put a 312 crank, rods and pistons in it. What kind of problems would I run into while doing this? I understand that the 292 heads have a smaller combustion chamber...? Will I only need from the 312 a crank rods and pistons? how about the timing set? I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can, before the time comes.
Thanks!

Don't set yourself up for failure on your first rebuild by trying to do something "exotic." The fact is that it takes care and experience to do a decent engine rebuild. Why complicate matters for yourself by adding in all these extra variables, not to mention the extra money you'll waste on the 312 parts; these items do not grow on trees from what I've observed. Keep it stock. Find yourself another rebuildable 292. Start working on it in your spare time. You can't imagine how much time you will spend on just the teardown, inspection and clean-up. Plan the project out carefully before you start. I hope you have a nice set of tools and a nice warm, dry place to work as well. All indispensable.

OK, so I'll stay with the 292 for now...
[link:www.kanter.com|Kanter's] Auto Products has a complete overhaul kit for the 292, and many other early engines. The 292 kit costs $525, and includes:
Gasket set, piston/ring set, main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, timing chain, cam gear, crank gear, cam shaft, push rod set, rocker arm set, lifter set, valve spring set, oil pump.
That plus the head/valve job I will get at the same time should cover everything...right?
I appreciate your input guys...:-)

If I can find one I would like to get a rebuldable 292, and do that one while I drive on the current one...Since I noticed the amount of oil coating my engine, and the amount of blue smoke, I think that the engine rebuild just got bumped up on the priorities list, just after tires/muffler/registration.
Thanks

So..., now that I'm buying a new engine (he he he) How about buying a 312 and rebuilding that, rather than trying to convert to one?
Would it just bolt in?

What do you say we move this thread over to the engine forum so all the Y-block officionados can help you on your "new" engine.....

Now I can't move it, so that would be where John, I believe, would step in...

i like the idea about buying a 312 also, but for the heck of it check into an overhaul book there's one titled the ford y blockrigin-maintenance-rebuild written by james eickman.
StockMan, I could have sworn we had a Y-Block forum but haven’t seen it for a long time.
Andrew, I’d start calling around in your area to find a good machine shop that knows something about Y-Blocks. Also, get the book that kbr recommended, excellent reference and history.
Well, I'll look into the book; and as for the machine shop, there's one just down from the street (right next door, incidently, to the glass place I went to), that has been open forever...It's called Rocky Mountain Engine. Any experiences with them? The dude's like 90, so he ought to know what he's doing, but I'll find out before I take anything there. I would like more opinions/info before I decide anything...I would like to buy a 312, and rebuild that while I drive on my 292. What I need to know is if it will just bolt up where the 292 is know? It has one motor mount on the front, bolts on just under the radiator. I have a 4spd/granny, trans code "F". Also, how do the 292 heads compare with the 312 heads? It's all in a '64 F-250, and stock.
Also, if we're going to move this, let's move it into the General engine Building Forum; That's where the Y-block forum got folded into.
Any opinions welcome; Thanks!

I forgot; I'm having really big problems finding a 292, let alone a 312, so If anyone knows where I could get one let me know! I'm looking for a 292, or preferably, a 312. Does not have to run, but must be rebuildable (not siezed, no interior rust), And must be complete.
