My 89 BII with 50K on a rebuilt engine uses oil at different rates under the same driving conditions. It leaks very little. Some time it will suck a quart in 400 miles and another time a quart in a thousand miles. It has done this off and on for a couple of years. Any ideas??? PVC?? I like the BII, just would like to figure this one out. Worked on cars for years.
It comes & goes. It was all of the sudden. I do all my own work & have since 1998.Worn rings would be a constant loss with smoke. It would not get better. The same way with a leak.
I wasn't thinking worn rings, just intermittently "sticking" rings, from deposts on the piston ring lands.
But from your description of it leaking some oil & sometimes going on a drinking fit, your idea of a acting out & maybe intermittently sticking PCV valve is a good one too.
Did the problem begin just after you last replaced the PCV valve?????? If so then maybe it was defective!!!!!!
Have the pistons ever been out???? If so, then maybe the ring gaps weren't aligned properly on one or more pistons, before installation.
Are you using the specified weight crankcase lube????
Did you change anything or do anything different, prior to this begining, like changing the weight or grade of oil????
