Do 6.9 and 7.3 share the same head gaskets? i have been told that they do. I have a 1988 6.9 diesel that split a piston in half and I need to replace it. I have a spare engine to get the parts from but I have an opportunity to get a head set for a 7.3 for real cheap. i am not sure if they will fit. i have the engine disassembled to the point that I have to remove it from the chassis for proper repair. Can anyone help with this. I am mechanical with gas engines and am very intrigued with these style diesel engines. Thanks
the cylinder bores are different size between engines, not by a lot but may make for different fire ring size. Also head bolts are different size, also not by much but be enough to make a difference. Coolant ports are the same size and oil return ports are the same size.
You might be lucky and have the 7.3 in your scooter ... look it over close and see if there are strengthening webs on the head at the bottom bolt holes.
