rough idle

Here is the history

I bought the 7.3 in march since the 6.9 was leaking out the head gasket. I switched the IP and injectors that were only a couple months old off the 6.9 and onto the 7.3. I also put in new glow plugs. I moved all of the lines with the IP except the #1 since I am told the length is different. Now There is a very rough Idle when the engine is warm. The cold advance is not working. I did not have the engine timed by a meter. It has great power and runs down the road good. If I keep the RPM's above 1000 the roughness goes away. The IP is from Pensacola and the injectors from diesel car.net
How do I smooth the engine out?

Have you had it timed correctly

It sounds like what is going on with my truck. I installed a new IP and injectors and no matter what I set the timing to, it would shake and run rough a minute after starting it. I reinstalled the old pump and injectors and noticed I have a bad #8 injector line that is leaking at the connector. It didn't do that before so it doesn't account for the new IP and injectors running like crap. I didn't have a timing meter, so I just guessed.

Mine had a very light haze at idle, almost barely noticeable kneeling down next to the exhaust. It smoked when there was hard acceleration. My injectors were torqued to 35Ft/lbs and were all snug when I removed them.

Set the time marks a less than a dime advanced. The smoke sounds the same as mine. I also had to kleen through it. After I put the injectors in ran great the next day it ran like crap. Ran kleen through and it fixed it.

I have tried twice to run ATF fill the filter, let run 15 seconds, set over night. It only runs rough after it is warm and at idle. I don't know for sure that It started directly after the IP an INJ change because I just drove to work and shut it off. I noticed it later because I was using it more and letting it idle warm.

I was wondering about the injectors and removed them all and looked at them and replaced them.

Eaton, I have been following your troubles on here, we sound very similar except that yours idles rough when cold also.

I did trial and error on the timing. I started advanced with width or the mark. then went a little at a time until I had quite a bit of smoke, then backed off a bit.

it has a little haze when it is idling.

Any other input guys?

Injectors have been snug

I also changed the fuel filter, and air filter and changed the oil.
I didn't have a stock air intake on the 7.3 so I put one on from the 6.9

Did you bump the injector tips on anything? When its running rough start cracking injector lines and see itf there is one that doesnt change the idle.

After installing the new pump and injectors, I can't explain why it wasn't running smoothly. After reinstalling the old IP and injectors, I have had a few leaks since and at least one was a bad high pressure supply line end. The other, I am thinking the return cap needs to be re-ringed and seated again. I have my number 8 with the bad line running OK at the moment with no leaks. My number 3 is wet around the return cap. I am about to go out and re-seat the number 3.

I am still struggling with this. It only has the rough idle when it is warm. Once it starts, I can stomp on the throttle and it goes away after I get over 1000 RPM. Then it won't come back if I let it return to idle. If I drive it and then let it idle it MAY return to running rough. Sometimes it does it and other times not. I had the injectors pot tested and they were deemed fine. I used my multimeter to check the glowplugs as indicated in the supertune you diesel thread. They were all Very close 11.3 to 11.7.
It runs down the road great, smooth engine. It has power. I am still puzzled

Sounds like you have an injector that isn't atomizing the fuel correctly. I had this exact same issue, when i starts knocking you maybe able to feel it in the line in addition to cracking the lines
