You've got a Ford 8.8 open differential with the 3.08 gears.

The 8.8 is a great axle. What are you looking to do with it?

im not sure. depends on the availiblity of parts for it. i know i can find parts for my ford 9. i was hopin to keep it so that i dont have to do abunch of other swapping to make my 9 work, electronics and such so that my computer stays happy. either way, what would u consider stonger? the 9 or 8.8? the 8.8 is full floating right?

No the 8.8 is not a "floating" rear end.

Neither of these are full floating axles. The 9" is generally considered the ultimate for stupid abuse purposes... but that is only if you have top of the line axles and diff installed. A 9" pulled from some late 70's - 80's car that had a pathetic v6 in it will be a bigger POS than an 8.8 from an F150. All the same goodies that can make a 9" strong, like Strange axles and Detroit lockers, are available for the 8.8 to make it as bullet proof as you want. And to top it off, because the 5.0 Mustang is SO popular, the parts for the 8.8 are cheaper than those for the 9".

Not if you like having a working speedometer and transmission you won't.

You're going to have to define "towing/mud truck/rockcrawler" a little more clearly first.

How much are you going to tow? What kind of power are you putting under the hood? How big are the tires on this?

In most cases, just based on the little information we have about how you are going to use the truck, you are going to need a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with a solid axle.

more or less i mud as much as i tow.. and from what ive seen the ford 9 is cheeper ..im lookin at a book and the detroit locker for the 9 is 120$ cheaper then the 8.8. but id go with the 8 just because i dont want the head ach of rewiring all that stuff. for now the truck has the 5.0..but ive got a built 5.8 which has been dynod at 387 hp. it wont have bigger then 35's on it. and i plan on upgrading to dana 60 in the rear when money comes along, along with a d 50 front. also beefier suspension. but for now its just a DD truck with all my parts for 4x4 comin outta the bronco, the bronco has an AOD
