Bronco 1987 - Headlight Problem

Hey Guys.. New here.. Read a couple of Threads, about the headlights, but can`t really see which one could apply to me, so I`ll go ahead with my problem..

First started when I didn`t have any parking lights, headlights, and tailights.. And my fuse as soon as I would pull the switch to get the lights on would blow.. So figured out it was my light switch... So I changed it, but my fuse would still blow... so I put a 20 amp instead, and that would work just fine...Driving like that for like a week, till

At one point I was driving and realized that my headlights would be going on and off, and not at a specific time... I could be driving all night one day with no problem, and the next day, they would come on and off.. etc... So I would have to always push back the switch pull it back out to get my headlights back (Taillight and parking lights are fine) I just changed the switch with a brand new one...so can`t be that..

So at the point, I figured that what would make my fuse blow was related to my headlight problem..... So I looked around, under the hood, under the dash, can`t really see somewhere where there would be a Short Circuit..

So is there a Relay somewhere that I don`t know that would be faulty and making my headlights go off and on... and at the same time blow my 15 amp fuse .. cause it doesn`t blow the 20 one...

Looked at the Lightswitch..Fuse box under the dash (to make sure their wasn`t a short, and looked at the actual headlamps connections, and everything looks fine...

WHAT IS WRONG...ahaha I`m tired, and most of time the headlights starts going nuts when I have a Chick in my truck.. So i kinda look stupid... ahhahaha !!! I what to fix the problem...

AND another thing.. real easy.. Replaced my rear window switch (on the dash) and forgot to pay attention on how it was plugged with the 5 wires...somebody has a Pic of where the 2 black, 2 Purple, and 1 Blue wires plug into the switch

Purple 1 | Purple 2 1=window up 2=window down
Black | Black
Blue

Like that ??

Thanks a bunch Guys !!

Hurley,

Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate info we can muster.

The problem is the fact that the headlamp circuit is protected by the circuit breaker inside the main light switch and the circuit for the parking lamps is overheating the main light switch which in turn overheats the headlamp circuit breaker inside. This is most likely due to an intermittant short or weak ground in the parking lamp circuit. The problem is the higher amperage fuse in the parking lamp circuit. You need to correct the problem in the parking lamp circuit so that you can get the 15 amp fuse to hold the load. Otherwise the additional heat created by the overcurrent in the parking lamp circuit will continue to cause the headlamp breaker in the light switch to trip.

Its interesting the your tailgate window wiring is consistent with a much older Bronco. The PURPLE/LT. BLUE and PURPLE/LT.GREEN was supposedly last used in 1983.

At any rate, the dashboard switch uses the LT.BLUE/BLACK wire as the power feed to the cneter of the switch. The PURPLE/LT.BLUEgoes to the one side of the switch and the PURPLE/LT. GREEN goes to the other. (If the window goes down instead of up and vice versa, swap the two purple wires). The BLACK is ground and should be tied to the other center position on the switch or the only remaining open terminal.

Hummm

So the only solution is to go through the hole wiring of the lights and see what I can find... ??? OMG thats gonna take for ever... how easy can it be to see something like that ??? Faulty ground... where can I look, that would have more chance of solving the problem ?

(at one point my Ignition Switch (on the steering column, Fried,) and it actually made a wire (connecting to the Soleinoid "on the right fender") catch on fire, and the wire had a "fuse" on it....you know the big rubber square that covers the wire... and then I cutted the part that was melted off, obviously got rid of the "fuse" and replaced the wire...without adding or replacing the fuse (figured those rubber squares aren't sold anymore and didn't know what could do the job instead...and then replaced the ignition switch...and evertyhing worked fine....(could be a problem with the headlight circuit ?"
and then after a while my lights stopped working, and it's at that point that I changed the switch, and well you know the rest of the story...

Also.. Just by curiosity.. My wiper switch doesn't work in all position...Slow, and intermitent positions does not work, So I can only use FAST wipers when it rains, but that I'm sure is the Ford Stupid Wiper Switch that I would have to replace...but that problem, could it be related to my headlight problem also ??

Complicated eh !! DAMN right...believe I Love mechanic, but the electrical part I HATE !!

On the switch I have 5 positions for wires... 2 For the Purples, 2 For the Ground and 1 for the power (blue)

+ +
+ +
+

So the top 2 + should be my Purples, the bottom 2 + should be my Ground and the Single + at the bottom should be my Blue (power)

Thanks for the time guys !
