4.6 vs 5.4

I know this has been probably asked many times, but I am going to say it anyway because it is important to me.
I have a 2000 with a 4.6 and I am thinking of buying a 2000 with a 5.4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both engines excluding the obvious: millege and power. Which one seems to have less problems? Which one seems to last longer and etc.?
Thanks for all your comments

Mileage seems to be abit more in the 4.6. I hear most guys say they get around 15ish with the 5.4 and I get 22 mpg with my 4.6. Power is a factor, the 5.4 simply has more. But I assume you know that. As for reliability, they both seem to be pretty good, I have seen guys with both motors post some pretty impressive total miles on their trucks. As for problems I can only say what my 4.6 liter has had for problems, Not very many. Starter once, alternator once, and other then that, regular oil changes.

Anybody know what year the 5.4 stopped spitting spark plugs? That's the only issue that comes to mind with the 5.4L. When I bought my 2001 (4.6L), I was told that the 5.4L still had that problem in 2001 year models.

I wouldnt say the 4.6 gas mileage is enough outweigh the pulling power of the 5.4, I have friends with the 5.4 that get just as good as my 4.6. The best I ever got in my 4.6 was 18mpg, I'm sure a 5.4 can get that.

The mileage difference between a 4.6 & 5.4 is really a wash. But the power opportunities with the 5.4 are much better. For instance, add a SI/DO Cat Back System with a 3" pipe & and air system and you will achieve significant performance results. I live in Colorado, much of my activities are in the Rocky Mountains and to get to my favorite spots, I must go over passes (I-70 & I-40) which range from 11,000 to 12,000 + feet. The 4.6 just doesn't have the torque under a load, while the 5.4 is really powerful. You can cruise control to the 11,000 ++ Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 at 65 mph.

Also, I have a 2001 SuperCrew with 44,500 miles and have never had problems with the known spark plug issues. Have had one coil pack go out early this year.

Hope this comment helps you in your decision. Mert

Late 2003 was when the heads got more threads for the plugs.
The plug blow out issue is there but only a small percentage of engines have problems. My 01 5.4L has run 66,000 trouble free miles.

Thanks, LxMan1. I've often wondered about that...

I guess the only way it would work is like in my case, where I rarely tow! So for me the added mileage is a bonus! If all of a sudden I wanted to do alot of towing (like I am planing on doing) I will look at getting a PSD. (which I am looking for one right now too)

The spark plug issue is manageable. Just follow the spark plug changing description stickied at the top. Clean out the wells with compressed air before removing the plugs and then USE A TORQUE WRENCH set to 13 ft lbs. when replacing them.
