Fuel Problems:

My truck started stalling and running poorly so I suspected water in the gas. I poured two bottles of alcohol in the tank and that really brought on problems. It cuts off and hesitates and will not hardly idle at all.Does this mean there is a lot of water in the gas? Also the heat riser has been removed,so it seems like the carb might be freezing up or something. Is the heat riser really needed? I was going to change the fuel filter. Is there one on the fuel pump and one where the line goes into the base of the carb? The truck is a 1966 with the factory 352. Has anyone had this kind of a problem? Thanks,Russell

There should be a filter on the carb, sounds like it is plugged. I would also put a clear plastic filter inline close to the tank to see if there is rust coming from inside the tank. Also check for weak rubber fuel lines as they can collaps from the pump sucking them closed. If rust is the problem, you may need to take the carb apart and clean out the fuel bowls, as fine particles can pass through the filter and clog the jets, or mess with the needle and seats. "Been there, done that!"

Rusty, Some of the pumps have filters under them, if it does it will be a metal cup looking deal under the pump by the oil filter. If there is a inline filter between the pump and carb you will be able to see it. You should be able to let the truck set for several hours and remove the line at the pump that comes from the tank and allow some gas to be drawn off like in a 2 liter coke bottle and tell if any water is present. Use a large channel lock pliers and remove the cannister and replace the filter. I know that wix makes one.

Let us know how you come out, and don't forget to check the points and make sure they aren't closed.

All good advice! I don't use the plastic in line filters. I use a metal in line filter installed at the steel fuel line between the frame and the fuel pump. This is a cool area away from ignition sources. There is a filter (looks like a sock) on the end of the fuel line inside the fuel tank. If you have huge rust in the tank this filter may be plugged. I usually toss these and go with the steel inline filter. Two cans of Alcohol in the fuel tank may be too much. I use one can per tankful about twice a year, in the fall.

I have a 1966 f-100 and I had the same problem, it had a small inline filter that screwed into the carburator but I but a larger clear one and that solved the problem. I think that I had rust in the filter. Hope it helps.
