I have a small manual steering box from a 64 half ton 4x4 on my truck, which is a 61 4x4.I have used up a few of these boxes. They don`t seem to last very long! I`m running 37inch tires.Soon i am going to put in a Dana60 axel. While i have it all apart i want to cure this steering box problem with something bigger, stronger and manual is ok to.The steering box is mounted behind the axel.Any ideas what might work?? Thanks!
I bet those tires place alot more strain on the box than the stock ones ever did. I am not certain, but did the second generation (pre 79 - Large Bronco) Broncos have a heavy box that can be adapted?? Probally wouldn't be a bolt in. Any large series f500,f600, etc.. have heavier boxes, but condition might be rather poor after all the work these units did....
Maybe i could find a rebuilt f600 or up unit, but i thought they were power assist or something.I want to keep it simple and i don`t mind manual. And oh yeah i`m sure those hummer tires add to the wear and tear.Any more ideas??
ned- how about calling Mr Ibeling in Applington Iowa? He is a farmer that does specialty work on Ford four wheelers. I purchased from him and installed a box from a one ton econoline van. Followed his instructions and cut a notch in the frame and then welded a brace around the notch to make a triangle. Also had to cut and weld the drag link. After doing the conversion, my steering is wonderful, and is now power. No problems with 38's. The original manual box failed me while running 35s. DF
