I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on whether leaf springs or coil springs are better. Which are better on a lifted truck, are more durable, and allow for better handling on and off road? New to trucks and wanted to get thoughts from anyone with first hand experience.
Thanks to all who reply!
Coil springs typically ride smoother than leaf springs but don't have as much carrying capacity. I would say in most applications a coil spring setup will give you better offroad handling. If you're wanting to lift a truck a LOT you have to be careful of high lift coils as they'll bow out in the middle but there are other options suck as dropped coil buckets, etc. The other thing to keep in mind is that the older trucks that came with coils (F150's) have radius arms which actually hold the axle. For peak performance you really need longer radius arms and for a lifted truck, radius arm drop brackets.
Leaf springs can be made to ride quite nice and flex very well if you set them up right. I have pictures of my build flexing here so you can see how leaf springs will work: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=18364
Thanks ivanribic for your response and definitely for the pics of the truck. That thing looks amazing. Im more of a fan of leaf springs, especially the way they look.
Thanks for the input.
