HELP!
OK Here's what happened. My Girlfriend (bless her heart) was going out to shovel the drive for me so I could get my 65 out to go to work. She got in, set the choke, (manual), and started the truck. She let the truck warm up and then started to back out, but forgot to push the choke back in. There was a loud bang from the tranny hump but she moved the truck. She also said that there was a thump when she drove it around the block a couple of times but that nothing else was wrong. It only thumped twice. (She drives this truck as often as I do in the summer but wont in the winter) I drove it to work that night and noticed the tranny was slipping a little taking off, and that I have to give it some RPM's to get it to take off. I also have a bit of a leak at the tail shaft but that was already there. Its a 65 F100 with a 67 390 attached to the C-4. I dont know what if any work was done to the tranny prior to me buying it but it has about 150,000 on it. I could use some help here as I'm tired of car pooling in the Subaru and want my Effie on the road. Still too cold to ride my bike.
Just some thoughts on the trans noises. If the engine was racing due to the choke not being in, the noise may have been from a weak u-joint, it will be under alot of stress if a reving engine is placed in gear. There will also be a loud thump as it goes thru the gears if the enging is still on high speed. There may be some internal adjustments in your C4 that need repair, call a trans shop about these. The leak at the end of the tailshaft could be from a bad extension housing seal, the big metal circle with the rubber donut type middle the yoke goes thru. These are not expensive, and usually are pressed in place at the extreme end of the trans tailshaft. The yoke on the C4 needs to be all the way in to the trans, as it presses on a bearing on the inner end. If there is too much play, the inner bearing could be damaged. Good luck with your '65
Motor and tranny mounts are OK. There was no more thumping after the first 2. The U joints are fine. The problem is that it slips at take off and has to rev higher than normal to change gears unless I have the pedal to the metal. The door cade plate says its a C-4 unless I read it wrong. If it is can I swap a C-6 in. What will it take. Its a daily driver and I want to get it back on the road. Still too cold and snowy to ride my Suki and car pooling is getting to be a strain. Thanks in advance for all the help.
Jay is the bell and tranny case one piece? How many bolts hold the dust cover underneith the engine. A C4 has 2, a C6 has 4. Stockman has a drawing of four different pans on his site, you might want to check it out.

In the still cool hours of the night,
you can hear chevys rusting away.
it may be an fmx also. the fmx had a removable bellhousing. ive never seen a c4 behind a fe either unless it was a race car. never seen it done on any street car.
What's the fluid look like? A bright cherry red or dark
maroon and burnt looking. Reving up to shift I would say
check the vacuum line going to the modulator, but slipping
on take off sounds terminal to me.
