Quick question about pinion nut torque

you guys say that turning torque is 7-14 in/lbs but the question is, is it only pinion gear turning or when the diff is complete with carier and axles, oil.
Thanks

Only the pinion after you have shimmed it and installed the crush sleeve. Make sure that is rotating torque instead of break away torque. In other words, make sure it is 7-14 in lbs when you are spinning it, not to get it spinning.

You torque the pinion nut tight enough to get the 7-14 in/lbs preload. You need to sneak up on it, because if you tighten it too tight, you need to start over with a new crush sleeve. You also need an in/lb torque wrench.

The torque wrench needs to be one with a pointer not a clicker.

What he's saying is that it might take more torque to get the pinion moving than it does to *keep* the pinion moving. You want to measure the torque while the pinion is spinning.

It's kind of like dragging something across the floor. It takes more force to get it sliding that it does to keep it sliding.
