Well, my 05 F350 PSD 4x4 CC SB is headed to the dealer Tuesday for trip #2 on puking coolant. I put a half-gallon in the degas bottle today.
I'm more and more certain that the problem is a bad head gasket. I've seen mentions of both aftermarket head studs (ARP?) and an aftermarket head gasket set. If the gaskets are indeed the problem, I've considered asking the dealer to install aftermarket stuff for me (it's under warranty.) But, I've seen some dissenting opinions on which (or both) to do.
I don't run a tuner... the hardest the truck gets worked is making emergency responses to various fire calls (lots of acceleration/deceleration, especially going through lots of intersections) or pulling various trailers up to ~10Klbs.
What say you? Studs, gaskets, both? Recommended manufacturer? Purchasing source with good price? Anything I'm missing.
ARP for the headstuds--or Ebay. Factory gaskets with studs is more than plenty for having no tuner. Actually factory gaskets and bolts is plenty for lots of tuners. I'd have the heads checked for surface flatness--that seems to be the most important consideration. Ford doesn't recommend decking the heads because of clearance issues, but I know several sets running around decked .010 with no problems. Ford says more than .004 needs replaced. Hypermax makes a very high performance gasket that requires no machining and no studs, but they are 500 a set. Good studs are 500/set. I hope your tech knows wtf he's doing--that's the biggest thing.

I've been running factory bolts and gaskets and no problems so far. Even with all my mods and racing it at the strip. Currently I'm running a 13.5 in the 1/4. I have new mods coming that will push it quite hard, so I've opted to go with head studs. When researching the gaskets, I've had some very knowledgeable techs on here tell me that factory gaskets will be fine with the studs. I got the ARP stud kit. Cost $530 shipped in. If your dealer will install this under warranty for you, it's what I would reccomend.
Godd luck.
The studs are the most reliable way, unfortunately, even if your dealer is mod friendly, they are not supposed to use them for warranty repairs. The reasoning behind it is, if you go out of town, and blow a gasket after the stud installation, the next dealer cant warranty a non ford part. Just want you to be informed.
vloney...I just talked to a guy yesterday that had that very issue. He eventually got his money back on the work he had to pay for at the dealer in Georgia(new dealership). I was surprise to hear that he got money back.
He also used the Hypermax gaskets and there was some sort of problem with how they were installed. I think he said the gaskets had been damaged or installed wrong. Hypermax ended up replacing the kit, but since he had to use the OEM gaskets he ended up selling them.
The FORD dealer in Georgia didn't have a problem with the ARP studs, but didn't like the HyperMax gasket set. They charged him $1100 for the whole job which I thought was a really good price and gave him a 3day car rental since he was on vacation. They took pictures of the gasket failure points and that's what got him paid by HyperMax. I asked him to email the pictures to me so I could show them to everyone here and will when I get them.

Thanks. I'll discuss that in depth with the dealer.
Since you're an expert, any suggestions/tips/tricks/considerations I should casually mention to the tech? The guy's pretty good, but still...
One thing I didn't see mentioned in this thread is that the Factory Ford gaskets were upgraded in '06. From what I've read, it seems less likely to have head gasket problems with this newer style gasket. Perhaps that's all that you'll need tvsjr?
I know there were some changes made on the "commonization" engines where they're swapping things over to be compatible with the 6.4, but I do not have one of these engines. Is there a new head gasket for the "normal" engines too?

Yes there is. I just bought a set for mine for when I install the Head Studs. I don't have the number handy, but when they looked up the Head Gaskets they had two part numbers and were able to figure out which were the newer ones.
tvsjr: I think the "commonized" motor started begining of this year, whereas the new gaskets started I believe (don't nail me on this) in '05 on '06MY trucks...
Hope that's all you need -- it's certainly what they should be putting on any 6.0 with gasket leaks...
I have a 04 Powerstroke and I just bought a set of ARP bolts because of bad head gaskets. Is there any real way to torque these correctly? Does ARP give directions on how to? I am not running a programer yet but I have a AFE intake and a cat delete do I need hypermax gaskets? any info would be great thanks Chad
