Alternator Trouble, Please Help!

I bought a 1979 F250 a few months ago, 496 engine. Died on me with dead battery, charged it up, died again not too long afterwords. Changed alternator out and low and behold, i noticed the cables were totally disconnected comming off the alternator, so battery was never getting charged up. I can connect all this myself, i just don't know where the cables go to do that. The one i'm confussed about was a thick red one, maybe 5 gage, where does that one go from the alternator. Also if this helps, the guy had two batteries hooked up before he sold it to me, and disconnected one of them and took it out when i bought it. Anyways, appreciate any help you guys can give on this matter!
Dan
