High Idle Mod

Completed the High Idle Mod today using #4 upfitter switch. It is idling at 1200 rpm. Question I have is how long of an idle is it proper to use the high idle?? I have two kids and sometimes stopping at side of road for potty breaks. If I idle for a minute , two, five , etc....

The idling sounds really high. Is this normal?? It just sounds rough on the motor.

If its sitting much more than 10 minutes, I use high idle. Less than that I dont bother. Mostly for me this is in the winter, in summer I just drive, shut off unless I have been pulling and use low idle for 5 or 10 min before shut down.

Our ambulances high-idle at 2400RPM. 1200 is not at all bad for the motor... remember, you're running down the highway turning 2K+ RPM constantly...

I just finshed the high idle mod on my 04 6.0 and am satisfied with the results. The sound of the engine @ 1200 RPM does seem load but I don't think it can harm anything. In the business I was in before I retired we used F350s and ran generators off a PTO for hours at a time (some times days) with the idle set at 1150 RPM with no ill effects. Granted these were 7.3 engines. The hours on these engines way over shadowed the milage.

I don't idle my 6.0 much. When I'm towing I have found that by the time I let off to exit the freeway, get onto the side road and get into the fuel station is a least a few minutes, enough to let the turbo cool down. If I'm not towing then I just shut it down and go into the store, restroom or whatever. I guess it would be different if I lived in a cold climate.

I hace an 04 F250 SD cc s\b with automatic and have just now turned 36k so the load is now on me so lets hope for the best.

Sorry to interupt, but I have a 2007 SD and am trying to wire the same I found the upfitter wire but the access wire is nowhere to be found. I supose the 06 should be the same as the 07. Can you please point me in the right direction.

That's it . . . U Need to look cool stuff up under your dash, trying to find a tiny wire you are trying to put a BUTT connector on, with little or no room to see, move, let alone finish the job in . . .

Completed the High Idle mod yesterday, worked like a champ. I have a 06 PSD and decided to use the Solid Orange PTO wire instead of the BCP wire. Wired it to the first 10amp upfitter switch, #3. I also unplugged, removed and cleaned my EGR valve. I have about 18K on it and wanted to see what it looked like. It was about as bad as expected, not wet, but heavy carbon and black buildup.
