7.3 electronics

What electronics would I need to keep when robbing a 7.3 from a early 90's model f250??? Does it have a ECM and if so what does it control?? My plns are to install it in a 1966 f100. I want to use my old body with the diesel engine. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

First ya better beef up the frame, were talking an easy 1500lbs for engine/trans and batteries. Get the whole wiring harness, PCM, etc. Are you going to use an automatic or standard.......

I am going to try to use the f250 frame if possible. I would like to go with a automatic but do not know what is currently attached to the 7.3............would a big block C6 bolt up and work with the 7.3?

The diesel had a C6 available on trucks until 93 SD........you would need the C6 specific vacuum assy and kick down rod on the IP etc. If the 90 has the E40D then you can get an aftermarket electronic shift controller .......Baumanator........ rings a bell

Gear ratios in the trans have to be for a diesel.......

To be honest I am totally new to the 7.3 and its options and different varities so any information would be appreciated. The big block C^ will bolt up to the 7.3 without any modifications??

The 460 C6 will not bolt to the diesel, it has to be a diesel C6. There were no real electronics for the pre 94 motors, it was only for the trans, the motors are pure mechanical, the only electric you need is for the fuel solenoid. The 7.3 IDI is a few hundred heavier than the 460.

Well, the glow plugs are another story, but it depends if you want automatic function or can tolerate just a simple toggle switch to operate the relay. The key suppies power to the controller, and the controller has a temperature sender and a kind of timer to keep it from running all the time. I don't have a wiring schematic to do the controller, but the toggle switch works nicely, and much less hassle and cost...

if you use an idi diesel, there are no electronics at all on the engine. the only electrical components are the glow plug controller, and a switched 12 volt line to the fuel shut off switch, besides the normal gauge sending units.

if you use a powerstroke diesel, which is a computer controlled engine, you will need the complete computer and wiring harness.

so basically, before 94, is idi, and after 94 is powerstroke.

Using a 7.3 IDI makes the glow plugs simple, you run battery power tot he battery terminal on the controller and ignition switch voltage to the ignition terminal.

No computer, no ECM, no PCM, just ignition switch, fuel lines and battery wires.

An IDI will start and run with four wires connected to it, negative battery, positive battery and ignition switch run and start wires.

Of course you need a few more wires for the alternator and gauges, but you don't need them to make it start.

Only diesel transmissions will bolt up, but any transmission from a Ford diesel 1983 thru 2003 will bolt up. I have not checked to see if the ones behind the 6.0 will fit or not.
