A buddy of mine has an 85 that he drove for a while but that has been sitting for 2-3 years. Less than a year before he blew the motor, he replaced the IP.
He's got a Dodge now so he's not interested in fixing it. He's about ready to start parting it out and offered to sell me the IP for $175.
My question is, does sitting around do them any damage? I figure it might be a bit gummed up, but sitting with fuel in it wouldn't hurt any of the internals would it?
An almost brand new pump for $175 sounds like I deal I shouldn't pass up to me.
The last IP that I bought for my '86 6.9 was a rebuilt unit with a good warranty from a local rebuilder. It cost $500. ****** up the $175 unit. They have good value as a core if nothing else. I also like the idea of offering to buy the whole engine as a spare or core. The spare that I keep around is invaluable as a source of parts and as a reference as to how things go together. Good luck.
......$240 ( I think ) for new with warranty and known brand new condition of pump. You may be able to find one with a lifetime warranty.......
DUDE! Where you buyin' your PARTS!?! I'll take two of those new lifetime warranty pumps for $240 apiece
Check around. Dunno' about your area, but in Seattle there are no NEW ones - reman is all you can get - even from Ford. Warranties vary from 90 days to 12 months MAX. And they go for anywhere from $400 - $475.
The best price I have been able to find anywhwere is $265 for a rebuilt pump from an internet outfit named DieselCare, and it has a 6 months warranty.
Yup, Dieselcare's as cheap as its gets, though they are a full diesel fuel injection shop here in Memphis and they also sell a hell of a lot of stuff on Ebay. I have heard fine things about them. Still, I'd lowball your pal since he can't assure its OK. I wouldn't give him more than $140 for it.

Well, I figure with less than 10k miles on it (maybe a LOT less) it is probably better than mine. Figured I'd put it on right away. He's a good enough friend that I know that if it is bad, he'll give me my money back....
Kinda' what I was thinking. The one I just bought (and was able to return thankfully) at Napa had a $137.50 core deposit - and I think that was with a 25% discount applie.
