I went to Advance to get some pushrods, and there were 3 sizes, 9.33, 9.44, 9.56, I got the 9.44 based on how mine looked with a metric measuring tape, all I had.
They list the ball type ends, hydro lifters, but the lengths make it confusing. Do I have any room for error?
Grinding the valves and seat wear will tend to raise the valve stem tip relative to the cam.. shortening the total length of the valve train. The piston inside the lifter has a range of travel, and when compressed, I believe that the clearance between the rocker arm and valve stem should be .060". FROM MEMORY, and that is rather older than the first FE's ever built... If you have a shop manual or rebuild book, check the spec.
If the clearance is too small, compare the current pushrod to the available ones, and get the shorter length, and obviously, if the clearance is too large, get the longer pushrod. Remember, there may be some wear on the rocker arm tips, which would throw off your clearance measurement.
