The 86 B2 2.9L V6 5 speed starts up and runs fairly smooth. After about 15 minutes it starts to slip and feels like i"m in neutral and just revs higher in rpm. I have to keep it at a lower rpm for it to catch and just run. After running for a about 10 miles it will always slip and eventually just not catch. What i mean is that I can put in gear and step on the gas and it wont move. I can also put it into gear and let go of the clutch and it won't stall/jerk. After letting it cool down for about an hour it catches gear and runs fine again and the same routine will cycle with it slipping and all At some time i can kind of smell a burning smell. Smells like the clutch is burning up. I recognize that smell from my Honda's clutch. ????????What's going on with it? Does the tranny need to be flushed? Do i need to replace my clutch? Is it time for a Tranny upgrade or rebuild? Please could someone enlighten me with their knowledge!
With the symptoms you have given and the burning smell that goes along with it, I would say it is time to get into the clutch for a replacement. You may need to take the flywheel off too so it can be resurfaced and get rid of the hot spots and grooves it may have.
I had a problem with my engine overheating and causing the clutch hydraulic fluid to heat up and expand, which would disengage the clutch a little bit and cause the clutch plate to burn due to not being engaged fully. Is your engine getting too hot?
for a while its been overheating until i changed out the radiator. Now the temp reads normal temperature. when it was overheating could the clutch have burnt out and now when it cools down it only catches a little bit until the clutch heats up so much that it just gives?
The clutch plate might be gone due to the overheating caused by not being fully engaged, You should replace the clutch plate and check the flywheel for burn marks. Also check the throw out barring for extreme ware. If you replace the flywheel, be sure to tourk the bolts correctly and use threadlock on them. A good friend neglected to do so and he is sill digging flywheel and bellhousing chunks out of the underbody and firewall, also it ruind the input of the trany.
alright thanx for the advice. I think i'm just going to do a full clutch replacement, minus the slave & master cyclinder. I was planning on swapping my differentials to 4.56 gears. any tips on that also? DIY LEVEL? NOVICE? MEDIUM? HARD? PROFESSIONAL ONLY? and where can i get a writeup on that?
I think that anyone with a decent set of tools can repair or replace anything on a vehicle. Buy a chilton or haynes tech book and use the internet for most of the info for how to do info. 90% of what I know came from doing it my self, in my back yard with crapy tools. Also I find that doing mods to an everyday driveing vehicle is just not the best thing to do, it can be costly in the long run. The feds and state laws say to get an inspection you must have all the parts or replacement parts on a vehicle that it came with from the factory. The reason you see alot of mods is because most inspection stations only care about mods and broken parts that could kill someone.
