how is the bama tuner on the 5.4 2006 f150..? I was debating on the superchip or edge. but there are so many tuners out there. my dad has a 07 king ranch deisel and the superchips woke his truck up alot... but i heard the gas burners dont really benifit from the tuner's. my dad also has a gas dodge 1500 that he says superchips did nothing for.
Well, superchips and EDGE tuners are pretty much canned tuners. They cant or wont access all the areas of the PCM like we can with the SCT Xcalibrator 2. Tuners can do a lot for gas engines, definately not as much as diesels, but they are still worth the cost, and probably one of the best bang for the buck mods out there. Any tuner will be better than stock, but the Xcal 2 will be better than any other, as far as the tunes themselves. The EDGE has a lot of features to offer, but the tuning is inferior, it only access certain parts of the PCM, and cant adjust for cold air intakes. I have been using the BamaChips tuners myself for many years now, before I even had my company, and I have put his tunes against the EDGE, superchips, fordchip, and troyer tunes on my own vehicle and a few customers, and his tunes always come out on top. unfortunately i dont have any hard numbers now to show you, because we were testing intakes on the 5.4 we had, and didnt have time to test the tuning
wow, thanks for the info, where/when will you post the results of your cold air intake test? i am definately interested in that and i will look into the tuners that you have mentioned.
also, i noticied used Bama Chips... are they just as good as new ones?
definately not, we have a killer 87 performance tune, and can use any octane from 87 up to 120 race fuel. These are custom tunes, remember, we can make them however you want them!
As far as the used tuners, the best way to describe it is, someone else pushed the buttons first. There is no wear and tear on them, someone else just used it first.
Ok, great.. i think ill give Bama a try. Looks like your sold out of the used Tuners, so i'll have to bite the bullet and get new... dont forget to post the results of the cold air intake... thats my nextupgrade.
Are you testing the closed Valant style intakes versus the Open K & N intakes?
we did have one test day already, tested the volant, trueflow, and a first gen JLT, but we had dyno problems and couldnt get anything worth posting up. We are waiting for BamaChips to get their new mobile dyno, they let us use it for testing.
If youre going to have a tuner though, i would suggest the JLT intake. Its the cheapest out there and makes the most power, but requires a tune. And since youll already have a tuner, that wont be a problem!
ok Bob.. you recomend anything for 07 Power Strokes (6.0) ? my dad has superchips, but was going to switch to the edge, but paused when he read your response to mine.
Bob Jusnes im getting ready to order intake from you but also i wanted to ask about the SCT Xcal2 where do i find the calibration code and the axle ratio at and do i need to buy the usb cable for the tuner
Hey Josh, the PCM is under the hood, on the passenger side upper firewall. You will see three large harnesses in a row, that is the PCM, under the harnesses is a white sticker, and on the sticker is a 4 digit code, should be three letters and a number. If your truck has ever been flashed by the dealer, that code may not be correct, which is no big deal. Once you have the tuner, we can use it to read the actual tune on the truck and email you the new ones, if necessary.
The axle code can be found on the door sticker. We dont need the actual ratio, the code on the sticker will work as well.
All new BamaChips Xcal 2 tuners come wtih a USB cable and a CD containing drivers and software needed to connect the tuner to your computer.
also will the air raid work with the existing maf housing i read on some of the other intakes on your site that they would work with molded wondering about the airraid and for the gas part of the questionnare on the xcal whats that about as far as what to put theres several different octanes on there im just looking to go with 87-89 performance
