Column Shift

I need an exploded view of the 3 speed column shift urgantly, mine keeps getting stuck in 1st. All I do is pull the gearbox selector by hand and then it's okay again for a while.

Is the shifts from later models with the same engine compatable with the '66 ?

Lubrication is good, but if that does not work, parts are easily available to rebuild it. I would rather rebuild and have mostly new as to buy a used setup that might be on its last legs. Have you tried going to your local Ford parts dealer and telling him you need to see a breakdown of the parts. If he has a parts book, most likely he will let you look at the picture. Columns are simple, not to complicated, but kind of a pain in the nuiscance. While you have it out, would be a good time to change the rag joint on top of the gear box. If you have play in your steering, good chance this could be a lot of it. If you can't get a picture of the right parts, I have one of the 63-4. If I can figure out how to do it, I can send you a copy.

Craig, While you are deciding on what course of action to take, try pulling the shifter toward the wheel when coming out of first, let it fully drop in neutral before going into second. I suspect that will help with your problem. ;-)

Thanks for all the posts PPL , but I must remind u all, I am in RSA, I cant even get simple things like headbolts for my 1981 Ford escort. So I need the exploded view of the column for me 2 be able 2 strip the unit and maybe repair it temporary. I need 2 get the truck modile. I will then order all the spares I need from USA (Ford Country).

I tried breaker yards today (20 in total) and found 1 F250 that had no usable spares on it.

SO keep the help comming

THANKS PPL

Had the same problems with my 66 3spd, sometimes, when trying to shift into second, it would be like there was no slot at all for the shifter to even attempt to go in. At the trans, it seemed that the nuts and washers holding the linkage to the trans were worn, replaced them, it seemed a little better. There are several plastic parts stacked together at the bottom of the shift column inside it. If you can, maybe you can very carefully disasemble the column. Make careful notes how everything goes together in relation to other parts. Possibility that some parts may be obviously worn, and could be reproduced using "local" material. If all else fails, there is always the floor shift route..Good Luck!

Try your local Ford dealer. Bill will have the part numbers for you in a little bit.

First and foremost, welcome to FTE. Short term fix, perhaps these pic's will be of some help, checked few of the Ford part supplier's website and only came across couple who provide illustrations on their online catalog. In event should decide to purchase any parts, strongly suggest contact by telephone to confirm if part is in stock, if not, suggest trying another supplier. Many of the Ford part supplier's offer free catalogs, handy to have on hand.

May also want to check the shift arm linkage.

There is a simple reason why the gears hang up. The bushings at the bottom of the steering column are worn. Replace those, and everything is back to normal. The parts are available from Ford, and if you are in RSA (Republic of South Africa?), you can order the parts from one of FTE's Ford dealer sponsors (y2kfordparts or Direct Ford Parts), and they can send them to you.

Nothing made aftermarket for a shift tube and bushings (which are also available from Ford)...Genuine Ford Parts only.
