fuel filter

How hard is it to replace the fuel filter on my 97 F150. I had done at a shop about a year ago. How often should the filter be replaced? Since putting the filter in last year I have put about 20000 miles on the truck in a years time.

Get the little filter removal tool from Autozone or Pepboys. It's up underneath driver's side rail, well at least on my 1998 it is. My Chilton's manual says like every 15,000 miles. Make sure you carefully relieve pressure. There is relief valve on the fuel supply manifold. Looks like a little valve stem you'd see on a tire. Use hose or towel to keep from dumping fuel on your COLD engine. And get underneath and wrestle it off with that tool. The tool slides into filter end to pull springs away so you can slide the line off.

Thanks for the reply. I did look to see where it is at. My dad picked up a whole set for fuel filter fittings. I'll be sure to relieve the pressure.

Here's a tip...your new filter will come with plastic caps protecting the inlet/outlet tubes, use those on the old filter after removing each line to help keep fuel spills to a minimum.

Don't smoke when you do this job!

Good luck.
