I just spent a week with the C*a*alier's replacement, the Cobalt, rented from National. It is very nice as far as body, ride and exellent fuel economy (34 mpg). The problem is that it is gutless and downright dangerous on mountain roads. Does GM even drive prototypes outside of the flat Midwest? The brakes are horrible and the automatic transaxle does not allow full manual gear selections for downhill compression braking. The computer does not seem to know that I am trying to slow down.

Jim
But therein lies the rub............you can step up to the supercharged 200+ horsepower Cobalt. At least there's a choice.....one Ford does not offer.
Yes can you post pics of the car I want to see how bad it's rusted, I am from Chicago and cars rust bad here but I never seen a 2000 or newer car rusted?

Ok,
I'll do it this weekend. I have been working well past dark this week.
DOHCmaraudar, weight until we have the svt focus again with prob a direct injected turboed I-4. Then youll have a choice, till then just stick with a mustang Gt and if thats to much, just get a base Im hearing low 15s high 14s out of the base v6, they've come a long way the base power IMO.

Have you looked at the Focus ST225 - I think you may have to revise that "direct injected turbo I4" comment...
A chevrolet cavelier a piece of junk......Imagine that Kinda like all of the other domestic compact sized FWD cars. It's not like we've ever been able to make a car in this class that just stands out as the gold standard of durability and reliability.
This coming from a chevy guy.
Around here the little automarts buy and sell these things by the dozen. Why? Because they are the absoulete cheapest thing they can buy. They buy these cars so cheaply that after a person makes the down payment the weekly payments are pure profit for the car lots.

My latest MOTOR TREND pitted the Mazdaspeed 3 against the Subaru WRX..LOW 14 second cars and both capable of 150MPH!!
Sidebar stated the Volvo powered 5 cylinder 221 horse Euro Focus is NOT certified for the US and would cost as much as a GT if it were.
So again Ford loses out on what I feel is a very important niche.......at the very least they should re-badge the Mazda.... like they did years ago with the Mercury Tracer and some year Escorts.
On a VERY bright note, it appears the 6 speed in the trucks may be what the Doctor ordered.........for the first time in memory the 5.4 has better track numbers than the GM 5.3(Expedition vs Suburban)..........very important concerning bragging rights IMHO.
I really wish that 6 speed (or even the Aviator's 5 speed) would have been available for the Marauder.

What happen to that turboed concept svt, y wasent that a go, I believe it was the mazda motor idk, it had a direct inject i-4 turboed, prob would have been quick, srt-4 quick. I ws suprise to c the new caliber srt-4 pulls off a low 14 but its so ugly IMO, its like a little durango.
The 2.2L and 2.4L cylinder heads are made like styrofoam. They are pressed together aluminum pellets. The consantly leak coolant from add places. I have replaced alot of them. They almost always fail a pressure test.
Same goes for the Pontiac Calvalier (I mean Sunfire).

I will say that the 2.4L quad 4 is a piece of junk, but the old pushrod 2.2 is a darn solid engine. They do need headgasket replacements sometimes, but I can do those in my sleep. You couldn't give me a quad 4.
Oh you can give me one any day I had a 88 Grand am 16v quad 4 160hp one quick little car spun a bearing at 160k though, wish I could find one again with a 5 speed. I also never heard of pressed aluminume pellets? might be markes left over from casting
GM full size trucks are the only thing GM really takes pride in. the other stuff, like vans, cars, etc. are just for quick competition. The engines are great. everything else is garbage.
