LAST EDITED ON 21-Apr-01 AT 10:13 PM (EST)[p]Can someone tell me if a 9inch rear end from a 1979 f150 will fit on my 1961 f100.Thanks for the help.
Gosh, I would think so but you could check very easily by measuring between the leafs where they mount. That would still leave the U-joints, but again, you could measure 'em up. Brake lines oughta switch over for sure and that would get you down to E-brake cables. I'll bet you could work something out on that.
Not easily. The 79 axle is wider, pluss the spring perches are farther apart and are for a 3" spring, yours are 2-2 1/4". You should be able to swap up to 72 or so.
Sixtie1F100, sounds like Nathan has the skinny on this one! LOL! Based on that info I'd forget the 79 rear end. Relocating spring perches isn't a good idea.
I do have a 9inch now but the pinion bearing is bad.I also wanted a little taller gears because my truck tops out at 60mph and the rear end I found was olnly $80 so I thought might be a cheap easy fix. But now I know thanks to you guys.
I found a guy last night that sells used and rebuilt center sections. Is $175 to $200 a fair price for a used center with a 3.50 gear ratio?
I have another question for you guys. I pulled ot the center of my rear end today and half the bolts for the ring gear were unscrewed half way out and the ones that were all the way in were finger tight. Has anyone seen this happen before? Thanks again for the help.
The pumpkin out of the $80 rear end will fit in your 61 housing. They're all the same. There could be a problem with the correct number of axle slines so you may have to use your 61 side gears to match your 61 axles.
I dunno about that ring gear coming loose. I hope I never do! LOL!
