Exclamation Lug Nuts

I recently got some new tires and wheels for my 83 F250, but i could never get any of the lug nuts off the left rear. So im sitting there with my impact wrench and im turning them "Lefty Loosy" but only see them turning slowly and not coming off . I then realize after looking closely at the threads that the are left hand threads! Im like WTF! then i notice the "L" stamped in all the nuts and studs for only that leaft rear. They came off no prob after turning them the other way.

Has anyone noticed the left hand threads? and are they like that on all Ford trucks from the time?

It was real common for all manufacturers to do that. All the big three did that for years. The theory was that the lugs on one side of the vehicle were spinning the opposite way relative to the lugs on the other side. Gradually, the lugs on one side would get looser unless they were reverse threaded.

Of course, now we know that doesn't happen - but it sure took people long enough to figure it out.

I saw a guy burn off all the lugnuts on a dodge years ago because he said they were totally stuck. I asked if they were left handed and the lightbulb went off...

That sucks. Thankfully the only damage done to mine was a one larger hole in the wheel. And the threads are messed up on the nuts.
