OK, bolted a 302 to my C4 tranny, truck will not move (engine not running) even if it is is neutral. Cannot push it, sounds like something is rubbing or catching inside bell housing. My local mechanic shop is telling me that just by bolting the tranny and engine together and not having the torque converter on properly (said i needed to spin it 11 times), I have broken/ruined my transmission and need to have it repaired or replaced. Ever heard of this???
Sounds like hogwash to me. If the converter was working with the V6 it should work with the V8 as long as everything else fits. I've never heard of spinning a TC prior to installing an engine.
Sounds kinda funny to me too. I just think that I have something put together wrong...was going to seperate engine and tranny again, and check it out. Went by chiltons procedures and it never mentioned spinning TC. Plus, how can you mess up the tranny by bolting it to block and never starting engine or moving vehicle...
Was the converter removed during switch? If so need to spin to make sure engaged. If not can do all sort of nice things to trans. I have a $600.00+ bill in file cabinet to prove it. Also did you use a 302 flywheel . Can't remember if same or not. Been awhile since messed with C4. good luck
Yes, I pulled the converter. I used the flywheel from the 302 because of the balancing. Understand that after a certain year they are 50oz weights instead of 28???
Anyway, I havent tried to drive the truck or even start it. Noticed this problem just trying to push it in driveway. So, damage should not have occured right???
Do the weights on the flywheel face the engine or transmission. With the offset of the Flywheel I have them facing engine, is this correct.
When you mate up a TC to the tranny you need to make sure the TC is fully seated into the transmission. When fully seated the TC will slide into the tranny pump. To do this you turn the TC while pushing on the TC and when the mating flanges line up the TC will slide in another 1/2-1" into the transmission. I do not think you damaged anything yet by what you have done. I am not sure about the orientation of the Flywheel, but I check it out later tonight when I get home if no one else tells you.
Thanks Cujo -- Also can anyone tell me what the part# or bolt size if for mounting tranny to engine. I would like to replace them with new. I know they are 7/16 thread but ones that came out are 1/2 head. My local fastners shop doesnt have them. Can I use a socket head(allen type) grade 9. Is that a good idea???
You certainly can damage the transmission when bolting it to the motor. If you pull the torque converter out of the transmission and don't get it properly seated when re-installing it you can destroy the pump gears.
However, if it won't move when you try to push it (engine off) you have a different problem. The torque converter doesn't turn when rolling the truck in any gear (other than park) with the engine off.
With the engine off and therefore the pump not turning there is no pressure to apply any clutches so there is no link through the transmission to turn anything ahead of the rear drum.
Well, I unbolted the tranny from engine and removed starter and truck will roll now. Noticed on starter gears that there were some marks as if it was contacting the flywheel. So, I believe what has happened is....
When I put the converter back in I didnt get it seated properly
So, when I bolted tranny to block it put pressure on flywheel which caused it to be out of position and contact starter gear. So, I am going to separate the tranny and block, get the converter seated properly and bolt it all back together and hope for the best. If I have damaged the pump gears I will go from there. Summit racing sells a nice C4 for around 600.00...LOL
