I was wondering if anyone was running or has heard the Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers on a FE motor? You can go to the Hooker web site (www.holley.com) and listen to them, but it doesn't tell you what kind of motor it's on. Some say it don't make a difference what motor they are on they will sound the same. I know from experience that isn't true!!!
My 1975 F-250 has a 390 equiped with hooker aero chambers. The exhaust is 3" in diameter ( a little too large for my application ) and I bought the mufflers with the input and output being in the center rather than on the corners. After the mufflers there are downturns that the exhuast man only spot welded ( so that he would eventually get me back to go full lenght since it leaks from the output of the muffler (*******!)) At idle, the sound is really deep and unique (totally different than a flowmaster) and a little louder. Since my mufflers were center/center configuration, you could see straight through them. To really get the full potental of the sound, I would stick with going full lenght exhuast. Now being an FE motor, my friend has areo chambers on his small block chevy in a similar truck like mine and the sound compared to mine is like comparing apples to oranges. The only reason I bought mufflers from Hooker is the bank for buck. I'd buy them again for my 1966 F-100 with a 352. Hope this helps!

Here's a clip of my 511 with 3 1/2" Aero Chambers.
Do you still have them? Would you buy them again? Thanks for the clip!!
They are very heavily constructed. Definately not a crappy muffler like some others. I would have to look, but I don't remember it having any rolled seams that can collect moisture and rust through. Like any performance muffler, they are not comfortable for long periods. They tend to be louder for the driver, depending on mounting location, than they are for the people outside the truck. When I first got them I thought my truck was pissing everybody off until I let somebody else drive it so I could stand outside and hear it under acceleration. It was quite reasonable. If light weight is a concern for you, then a cheaper muffler might be better. If not, then yes, I would buy them again. I am still running mine.
Thanks for the info Scouder. I was looking at either the Flowmasters or the Hookers and just wanted some opinion's on both. The Hookers sound really good online so I think I will give them a try.
Take a peek at Spintech's. I have their Truck RV mufflers they are their quiet mufflers but I must say I wouldn't want it any louder with 2 1/2" expanding to 24" x 4 1/2" tips. They have shorter and louder mufflers up to race only take your pick and they are heavy gauge plate not a tin wrapped muffler.
Scoot...I dont think that Mic on the video camera does the Areo's Justice? I think in person they sound much deeper.. JMO.. Still sounds great!!
RJ
SO you would recommend them too Russ? I like the deep tone instead of the louder tone. I thought about putting the old school cherry bomb or glasspack muffler back on the truck, but they tend to be very loud when in hard acceleration..... Yes it does sound good even with that mic!!
Beemer, you got your's recorded where a confused man could hear them??
Josh; I don't have any sound clip of the SpinTech's on my truck, remember I have 4 1/2" tips that droned 14-1,700 rpm's. I had to shove 3" x 18" long female ended lovered glasspacks into the tips to reduce the "drone zone". Above 40 mph or highway speeds it's wisper quiet in the cab. With the back problems I have lately I haven't been able to crawl around and add a set of Vibrant's SS super quiet resonators then I can remove those glasspacks as they made the exhaust sound muddy.
I did find this clip, couldn't play it as the audio went silent on this puter.
This is from a 2000 Mustang, different motors will sound different plus I bet this is not a Truck RV muffler like I have so it's louder.
While your looking check into Magnaflow's, my muffler shop friend has them on his 502/502 with 3" and a Dr.Gas X cross, tips behind the rear tires. I was impressed on how quiet that exhaust is with a 224/234 @ .050" cam 502".

Well I went to the track before I bought mine and listened with an unbias ear.. And plus I didnt care how Loud they were.. I was just looking for a muffler that had the least restriction and still had a good tone... And about 3 out of five guys I asked, were running Hooker Aero's either the chamber's or the Max Flow's..and the other 2 were running Magna's...
I live out in the country... and the Law around here doesnt enforce descibel<sp? limits on older vehicles or Motorcycles...So I bought the Max's
They are quite a bit louder than the chamber's..But they have a real RUMBLE too them.. But my Truck is not a daily driver thow... But to my understanding the Hooker Aero's have the least restriction of any Mufflers on the maket....
But like I said before the Cops in my neck of the weeds are really cool when it comes to the noise level....When I lived in L.A. I ran cut aways on my Harley..and usally got ticketed once a year for the Exhaust.. Hell I run Drag Engineering, Drag Pipes on it back here without any problems at all.. I just Idle around Hospital's.....LOL...
Your ear will only tell you what you like..and Muffler placement in the system will change the sound also...Metal, Stainless, thin or thick wall tubing, Aluminized,Galvinized, with or without an X pipe, Shape and size of tips..will all change the sound..
You just have to hear something you like..and if it will fit your application...Go with it..JMO..
Hell I have a friend that has a 65 Stang 2+2....and runs Headers into Cut down drive shaft tubing that are cut at a 45* angle and dump out just in front of the rear tire's..and you would swear he had a big motor in it!! Pop the hood..and there sets the original 289.. LOL...
I found this flow chart if its of any intrest on 2 1/2" mufflers. How they come up with 15" for test is a stange one, many manufactures use different pressures resulting in different numbers. Go into their Muffler Flow Tests at;
The reason I was thinking of going with the Aero's was the flow chart showed them to flow more then Flowmaster and not as much as strait-pipe. I want a good deep tone without the really loud whine. Don't get me wrong I liked the way the truck sounded with the cherry bombs on it with 2 1/4 pipes, stock. I just don't think this new motor would like 2 1/4 pipes and it would probably be ear piercing loud. The site I posted that has my motor on a stand running, is hooked to a set of cherry's and they sound good there, but like you said Russ it will sound different with the crossover and 2 1/2 pipes. It really sounds good open headers, but the cops around here are kind-of buttheads when it comes to sound.
